Menai Bridge Cricket Club
Menai Bridge Cricket Club are celebrating one of their most successful seasons, culminating on September 29 2005 with the opening of their new pavilion by Matthew Maynard (ex-Glamorgan and England), current assistant coach to the Ashes winning England team, with a match against a Glamorgan XI.
On the playing side, Menai Bridge - who play in the North Wales Cricket League - have gained promotion for the second successive season and will next year play in the Premier League for the first time in its history.
The new pavilion project was initially proposed by John Hubband, Cricket Development Officer for North Wales, and Mr Bruce Cruse, the ECB National Facilities Manager, both realising the benefits it would bring to not only Menai Bridge, but to Anglesey cricket in general.
The pavilion cost £154,000 to build and is part of an initiative between the England and Wales Cricket Board and Channel 4, who, along with Ynys Môn County Council and Menai Bridge Town Council, contributed grants towards the cost of the project. The club raised £9,000 and was also grateful to First Hydro Limited and the Co-operative Society for their contributions.
The match against Glamorgan was a closely fought affair with Glamorgan eventually winning by two runs. The match attracted a large crowd which included a lot of ex-members and players from the past who were impressed by the new facility replacing the 'wooden chicken shed' which had served the club for 30 years. There was also an opportunity for a large number of youngsters to receive cricket coaching and advice from Matthew Maynard. Matthew spoke about his involvement with the England team and the winning back of the Ashes.
When the new 2006 season starts, the club will be running two Saturday XIs, a Sunday XI and a mid-week XI. The club runs three junior teams at various age levels. Anyone interested in getting involved in playing, umpiring, scoring or gaining coaching qualifications can contact either Mr Steve Jones (713184) or Mr Keith Hughes (713402).
Menai Bridge Bowling Club
The Menai Bridge Bowling Green was opened in May 1934 by Edward, Prince of Wales, and was subsequently widened in July 1985 with the provision of floodlighting. Funding of these improvements was partly by grants and by the club members themselves.
In August 1996 a new pavilion was added, making the bowling green one of the best facilities in the league and allowing the club to participate in national competitions. The setting of the green is one of the most picturesque in the country with a view that makes many visiting teams and tourists jealous.
The club has recently started a scheme to improve the condition of the playing surface and has now appointed a contractor to carry out the remedial works, as recommended by the Sports Turf Institute and under the guiding hand of the town council.
The club recently embarked on a programme for the local youth, with one young member progressing to represent the county at inter-county level. However, over the last couple of years, membership has declined and the club would like to hear from any prospective members at both youth and senior level.
