Urdd Eisteddfod 2008

A child's face painted in the colours of the Urdd

Last updated: 23 May 2008

One of Europe's biggest youth events is being held in Llandudno in May 2008. Here's our essential guide.

What's it all about?
Urdd Gobaith Cymru is the largest youth organisation in Wales and one of the leading youth organisations in Europe. Many of Wales's most famous artists and actors have been members, such as Ioan Gruffudd, Bryn Terfel and Cerys Mathews.

The Urdd National Eisteddfod is a competitive festival for children and young people. Competitions range from choirs to solo recitations, dance, science, arts and crafts, composition and the awarding of the bardic chair to the winning poet.

It takes place during the May half-term week each year and usually attracts over 100,000 visitors and 15,000 competitors. As well as the main competitions, there's also a fun fair and stalls, plus art, design and technology exhibitions, a climbing wall, cyber-café and many shows and concerts in the evenings.

How can I follow what's on?
Much of the week's activities are broadcast on S4C and BBC TV, as well as BBC Radio Cymru. You can also follow what's going on with comprehensive coverage on the BBC Cymru website, including a live audio feed of the stage throughout each day.

Where is it taking place?
A different county hosts the event each year. This year it's Conwy and the location is Gloddaeth Isaf Farm, Glanwydden, (just off the A470 between Llandudno and Llandudno Junction), from Saturday 24 May until Saturday 31 May 2008.

The main events
The main pavilion, which holds up to 1,500 people, plays host to competitions during the day and concerts in the evening. For details of concerts, events and results at the eisteddfod, visit the Urdd Eisteddfod official website.

Facilities for non-Welsh speakers and Welsh learners?
There will be translation facilities in the pavilion to help non-Welsh speakers follow what's going on. There'll be information about how to obtain and use them in the welcome tent.

There's also the Welsh learners' tent, which will hold preliminary rounds for learners' competitions in the morning and children's workshops in the afternoon. There'll be lots of other activities for learners all over the maes (field).
