Learn and play

Crayons and paper

Last updated: 18 April 2007

Nicola Roberts from Llandudno Junction tells us about Ti a Fi (You and Me), the playgroup which uses fun and games to help children and their parents learn Welsh.

Since this article was written there have been some changes to the group. It is now run by Eleri Jones and held in Llandudno Junction Memorial Hall.

The Llandudno Junction Ti a Fi playgroup runs from 9.15am to 10.45, Monday to Friday. We work alongside Ysgol Maelgwyn, where most of the children will go after Ti a Fi to be taught largely through the medium of Welsh.

We do Welsh songs and introduce little Welsh phrases to help the children and their parents with the language. The parents, who are mostly non-Welsh speakers, get quite involved, sitting down and playing with the children. They're really happy to see us up and running.

The idea is to introduce Welsh to children, who pick it up really easily at a young age, and also help their parents. There was no such thing in the area when my three year old was younger, and now it's great - my little girl comes with me every morning.

I can survive in Welsh, but I'm going to improve it in the next Llandudno Junction learners' class. It'll be really helpful to be able to help my children with their future education.

Many children's favourites are available on DVD. Also I play Welsh CDs in the car, songs are a great way to learn Welsh. Learning Welsh as a second language in childhood is no problem. My 6 year old attends Ysgol Glanwydden and has no problems at all.

I recommend the DVD of Ding Dong, the Welsh-learning programme for preschoolers from S4C and Acen. Look for it on-line or from Na Nog, the Welsh shop. My kids love it. The songs are fantastic. The only trouble is that it teachs South Walian Welsh, but that's minimal trouble, in my opinion.

I have a four year old daughter and at the moment live in Somerset. I am from north Wales originally and will be moving back in the next 12 months. I want to help my little girl learn Welsh before she starts school up there. Can you help? Maybe is there a CD or software I can use?
