AN old police station has a new lease of life thanks to a partnership between the police and race equality workers. The North Wales Race Equality Network (NWREN) headquarters was opened on Monday June 7 in the former Penmaenmawr police station.
The wheels were set in motion three years ago when the now Deputy Chief Constable Clive Wolfendale met with the NWREN to discuss diversity issues. The network mentioned their accommodation problems and it was agreed the police would offer NWREN and the Commission for Race Equality (CRE) the former police station on a 10-year rent-free lease. NWREN has raised funds to refurbish the building.
Greg George, diversity officer for North Wales Police said: "This is an unique opportunity for North Wales Police to work closer with North Wales Race Equality Network and the Commission for Race Equality to promote good race relations in North Wales."
Susheela Lourie, chair of NWREN, said: "We are delighted to have a permanent base in North Wales which gives the organisation a higher profile and added status. As well as an office for CRE, we are attracting other black and minority ethnic organisations under our roof - making a strong BME presence."
Guests at the opening ceremony were also addressed by North Wales Police Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom, Wyn Davies the Mayor of Conwy, Janet Ryder AM, and Cherry Short from CRE.
