Weird stories

Boats in Holyhead harbour Strange things seem to happen in Holyhead. Check out these tales and add your own.
  • More stories of weirdness...

  • Ceri's story - Holyhead
Every time I go for a shower it gets really steamy, but one part of the room wasn't - it was in a shape of a small girl about the age six. I see her everywhere I go in my house, I would either wave at her or smile and she would do the same.

I've seen her a couple of times and only once she has spoken to me, which said 'In Welsh my name is lucy or Lisa' - I couldn't hear very well 'cause she said it in a whispery voice.

When I go to bed at nine I watch the TV and a beam of light goes through one wall to the other, but it doesn't scare me. I would like to see her properly one day.

    Kerry's story - Holyhead
While sleeping in my bed one summer night, I felt a force grab a hold on my head and wouldn't let go for about 15 minutes - there was no other people in the room - so what could it have been?

Also lots of objects go missing in my house and turn up in the same place a few weeks later.

Some people have ideas of haunted houses - mine isn't the typical horrible idea - just a bit annoying sometimes!

I spent the entire summer of 2002 living in my tent at valley of the rocks Porthdafach before I got a house in Kingsland. I was told about Careg y Bwgan by my then partner, a Holyhead girl, so I tried it - nothing. All these ghost stories. Oh come on people, get a grip on reality. And the lighthouse at the end of the breakwater, well I've spent nights up there being the only person there and nothing. Penrhos Point - nothing. I don't sleep well so I end up walking around a lot late at night and nothing has ever happened. Maybe it's because I'm a non believer.

I stayed here with my family when we were young me and my brother were intrigued by the old house out by the sea, or as someone else called it, the scooby doo house. Is it still there? My cousins also stayed with us there. We stayed on a campsite in a caravan behind the Cliff Hotel in the early 80s.

This happened in the flat above the charity shop/79 looking out at the coleg menai building near the high street in Holyhead. before moving into this flat with some friends who already lived there, they had told me about this 'ghost' who was freaking everyone out, my friend Kerry claimed that while she was in the bathroom something kept untying her necklace so it fell off and while laying in the bath something kept pulling her hair.

I absolutely didn't believe them (I'm quite cynical ) so when i moved in i thought nothing of it. one day i was sat up in my room (which was at the top of the stairs) alone playing my guitar, certainly not thinking about anything spooky, then i hear this loud sound from across the room that sounded like someone inhaling a big breath. it was loud enough to make me stop and look. saw nothing so carried on playing, a few seconds later i hear an exhale sound and it was louder, again i stopped and could hear exactly where it was coming from but saw nothing. My rational thought told me to ignore it, so i did, but it kept happening, louder each time, it happened about 6 times before i said to myself 'this is getting really messed up, if it happens again i don't know what i'm gonna do. it was making me feel insane. i tried to calm down and play. but as soon as i started playing again this almighty rush of sound got up from the other side of the room, which made me stand to attention as it swooshed towards me with such ferocity, it rushed straight THROUGH my body and as it did made all my hair prickle up, i could feel my hair move(i thought that only happened in cartoons!)and a prickling sensation on the back of my neck and icey cold air around my body. my bedroom door was jammed shut so i was tugging on that and screaming...i got to the bottom of the stairs and everyone came out of their rooms with smug looks and "i told you so's".

there is no doubt in my mind now that 'ghosts' do exist. There is no better proof than experience. After that we got a local 'witch' to come and bless the house and she burnt a load of sage and did some stuff but i think that just annoyed it because it seemed to follow my friends to their next house.

I have heard loud footsteps pacing back and forth whilst I've been fishing at the end of Holyhead breakwater by the lighthouse and when I've shone a very powerful torch and even looked all around the place there was nobody there at all. Rumour has it that a man threw himself off the top of the lighthouse killing himself during construction works in the early 1900s.

about 14 years ago me and my mate tracy rented a flat out at the bottom of kingsland hill( facing the shop), anyhow it was late one night and we were bored so we just sat looking through the window when all of a sudden an old lady appeared from nowhere! then disappeared again, this happened quite a lot and it did scare us. Has anyone else seen anything of the old lady in kingsland or know her?

Four weeks ago me and my girlfriend Alex were walking home from the beach. We went into town so we could get home quicker. As we were walking through the park we heard a loud noise but we didn't know what it was. I went to see what it was and saw a really strange man with what looked like bones in his hands. I ran back to Alex, took her home, then I met up with a few mates. We went to check it out but when we got there all we found were some bones on the floor. But they where in a sort of circle with a dash in the middle. It was kind of a weird night!

my name is silcock and i was with my friend andrew and we were walking home from holyhead through penrhos and i heard a funny sound like a kid laughing - we panicked and ran as fast as we could to find the way out. i could see the way from where i was standing, it was right in front of us, but when we started to get close to it we stopped moving. we couldn't get any closer to the exit from where we stood. i asked andrew to try but nothing happened. then he turned round and saw a sign that read "the faster you run the less time you will take, travel slow and you will be hit, find a path round my curse and i will let you live" so we panicked and ran away from the exit till we couldn't see it any more. there was a sharp bang, i woke and found andrew on the floor in his room - it was all a dream but i wouldn't go to penrhos in the dark cos i heard that the police found the head of a boy in the place where we stood in my dream.

When i was in Primary School and my Sister was in her 2nd year of secondary i think, we had a clock on the wall above the fireplace, and every day for about 2 weeks we would get home after school [my mum would pick me up] and i'd go straight into the kitchen to get food, one day mum went into the living room and found the clock and a wooden spoon placed on the rug in front of the fire - it wasn't like it had fallen, it was like someone had placed it there; it was in exactly the same place every time...it kept happening for 2 weeks and my sister thought I was setting it up to scare her, but she got home before us one day and she found it there and was very scared! so now, the wooden spoon has been moved and the clock is still in that same place!

There is an old stone house boarded up, it can be seen on your right as you enter the port of Holyhead. I took a picture of it on my phone when I pressed zoom I could see a gaunt old man in 1700s attire clearly. Does anyone know anything about this building?

Hi i've noticed a few people talking about the floating objects (ghosts) by 4 mile bridge round the bend. Its a reflection from the headlights in a puddle, it never happens in dry conditions but happens everytime it's wet.

Me and my (not anymore) friend were walking to the quarry and a man was walking in the opposite direction. Behind the man i could see a woman walking right behind him. I could see every single detail of her. When they went past i had the urge to look back, so i looked back and the woman had gone. There was no path that she could have walked down and it was only a second after they passed that i looked. so there is no doubt in my mind that she was a ghost. Not only did i see her but my friend did also.

The woman i saw was tall with long brown hair and was wearing a green victorian dress. i wasn't scared at all, it was very interesting because i've never seen a ghost before and i've always believed in ghosts anyway, so she really amazed me.

hi Liz (canada), so glad someone else had heard of the bogey stone! It actually came to stand there after the Druids moved into Wales, or so my grandparents told me when I was a teenager - apparently if you were to fully investigate Holyhead you'd find quite a few of them. There is one in the back fields of Cae Bog Parc. Not really sure what the Druids used them for.

In the late 1960s, I can't be sure about the date me and my family were on holiday in the cliff hotel at trearddur bay. It was early evening and we had been to south stack we were starving and decided to go into holyhead for a fish supper. On the way back to the hotel we were driving along the porth dafarch road when I noticed this glow in the night sky - it looked like the moon obscured by cloud but the wierd thing was it seemed to be moving. also the moon was out, but in a different place. So we stopped at porth dafarch to whatch this strange glowing light whilst eating ou fish supper.

Eventually this glowing ghost light moved behind a hill and we couldn't see it anymore. We finished our food and set off for the hotel but as we drove up the hill what do we see, it's that strange light again this time it looked like it was right above the hotel. everyone was outside looking upwards talking about aliens, I thought that's it end of the world, only being young.

we stayed up late into the night transfixed by this thing until tiredness took over. The next day in the papers they said it was a luminous gas cloud, which nobody believed because of the way it was moving. Maybe somebody there could look up old newspapers, as I am now alot older it would be fascinating to be able to read it.

My husband and I were driving along the Rhoscolyn road towards Four Mile (the old school house) about the same time as you (feb 05), at around 10.30pm, when we noticed something float across the road. I was a little reluctant to say anything at first until my husband asked "did you see that". We decided not to say anymore, and agreed to wait until we got home. On arriving home we both drew a sketch of what we saw and both produced the same image. It appeared to look like a woman stooped forward carrying something close to the body. We have later heard that other people have had sightings in the same location.

There's this building called the m.o.d on Newry Beach. Me and some mates were there, standing at the end of one of the hallways - it was too dark. We had a camera phone so flashed the light off it into the hallway and there was a man standing in the middle of it ... everytime we pulled the camera away he had gone but when the camera went on him he was there.

we entered the MOD building (porth-y-felin house) one day. Loads of spooky things have happened. We saw the bearded man and caught him on video. we also heard glasses being smashed from upstairs etc. We saw a soldier standing at the end of the right hand corridor. its been very spooky. Weve been quite far in the house (but running out screaming every time lol) but we've been in the basement, pretty much everywhere downstairs and we walked along the upstairs corridor but it was a bit too spooky.

Ok, has anyone heard the one about the woman on a horse in Penros nature reserve? My uncle swore blind that he saw the likeness of a woman on a horse galloping towards him out of the mist while he was camping there. He is a really level headed person and is convinced that there's a ghost of a horsewoman on Ellen's walkway by Penros.

To Stacey, Manchester: Yes, I know that stone on Porthdafarch Road. We called it "Careg y Bwgan" (The Ghost Stone). We always were told that if you walked around it with your eyes closed - you'd find yourself INSIDE the stone! Needless to say, although I scoffed at the story, I never walked around it 3 times with my eyes closed! Anyway, does anybody know how this huge stone came to be standing there? A relic of the distant past perhaps? Any ideas?

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Bogey Stone on Porthdafarch Road. A 300 year old legend states that if you walk around the Bogey Stone (at Witching Hour any night in August) 3 times, you will see a man on horseback at the entrance to the stone, whose head hangs off! The legend states that this guy was a highwayman that used to hide behind the rock and pounce on the rich to steal their goods while travelling. Apparently caught in a battle with a travelling soldier, the man was beaten and killed, but his head wasn't fully dismembered, hence it hanging off! They say that his spirit stays there waiting to exact his revenge on the soldier who finally put his robbery to an end.

In my house in the night there are footsteps walking across the landing which disturbs me when i wake up i see nothing. My friend was staying in my house one time (sarah) and apparently she could hear a little girl screaming which is ironic because i hear this same scream many times but the next day my friend told me that she had seen a young lady look at her from above the bed this scared her. But from that day my bedroom has been very cold and draughty which there has been no explenation for. xx

Hi - you know those people who tested the burn mark in the ground, how come they had to dig a hole around where it was? It is gone now and the hole they dug is fairly deep. But I'm not bothered - the hole has started to glow in the night, it is really cool.

Hello everyone who has seen the burnt symbol in the ground. We have tested it and found it was caused by a freak lightning strike. There is no need for anyone to be concerned. It is not a symbol - some of the grass was not torched by the lightning so it was not burnt. We are not in contact with the FBI.
