"When they were in the process of dredging the harbour here they discovered the remains of a mammoth. Lord Stanley presented them to the Natural History Museum in London.
I went there recently but they weren't on display. So I spoke to a worker there in the hope of finding them. We got really hot and sweaty hunting through the storage rooms of the museum until we found them in a cupboard. There is a molar and part of the mandible. There's a local effort now to bring the bones back to Holyhead and display them here.
What's really incredible is the thought of something like a mammoth roaming the area. There was a photo of some mammoths superimposed onto the breakwater in the local paper. One person came up to me in all seriousness and pointed out that the breakwater wouldn't have been built in that period!
Looking to the futureA significant event happened here a few months ago. The Commonwealth Games baton, which was making its journey through Anglesey, arrived in Holyhead from Ireland to a great welcome. The Australians who brought it were made up with the town and with the people. They said it was one of the best receptions they'd had anywhere, and I don't think they were just saying this to be polite.
The point I make, which is entirely biased, is that I think this is the best place in the world. You can't beat the people.
We all know each other's business and we don't mind. That's nice. There's a lot of good people doing a lot of good things in this town."

Glad we can help in bringing the Holyhead mammoth back to Holyhead for local display. To put the record straight, the jaw was on display at the Natural History Museum for nearly a century, but it was put back into the study collections when the old Fossil Mammal Gallery was dismantled in the 1960s.

What a pity the bones are hidden-up in a museum many miles away from where they were found and remain unseen. Bring them home! They are part of the local heritage and deserve to be displayed!

Good to see news of the Mammoth hit the BBC web site, shame there was no mention of the Morlo History & Heritage group who have worked on this amongst other projects.
