Step into the past

Robert Hardy Veteran actor Robert Hardy steps back in time to enter the world of a Tudor gentleman's mansion.

"Vaynol is remarkable for its ability to take you into the past. When you first see it, standing there, it is tough and rugged.

I spent most of my childhood on the Welsh borders and I am intrigued and devoted to almost everything Welsh. I am passionate about Vaynol and once you see it, you really will fall for it, as I have."

Demian Arenas from Mexico
Me and my family lived in Vaynol Park from 1984 to 1987 at the White Cottage just in front of the farm with the old clock tower. My father, Dr Virgilio Arenas, attended the University of North Wales as part of his sabbatical studies, while I attended the Ysgol Friars in Bangor. I have so many great memories of my years at Vaynol, exploring the fields and woods. I remember I found one day the old crypt in the middle of the woods! I am very pleased to hear the park is being taken care of and hopefully will be opened to the public.

I first read about Vaynol in "Country Heritage",( published by Liverpool Daily Post and Echo in 1951) which I found at a fate last year. I had feared it may have gone the way of so many of Britain's lovely old buildings, so I am pleased that it is being looked after. It looked like a fine family home in 1951 when Sir Michael Duff was living there, with many paintings and nice furniture.

As I am (to the best of my knowledge) the last person born within the walls of this beautiful house (1962) where my family lived by virtue of my father's job, I feel both an enormous sentimental bond to the house and highly privileged to have lived there. I would love to see the place restored, working and lived in - with lots more kids born, or at least growing up there. The much talked about idea of an ongoing restoration school is very interesting, but I wonder if it can't be used in some way to house or help people who wouldn't otherwise have the opprotunity to live in such a beautiful enviroment. An orphanage fund by some kind of trust. I believe very strongly that it should be lived in as well as being opened to the public, which I know is contradictory but not impossible!
