Salsa fever

Last updated: 22 October 2008

Salsa dancing has taken the UK by storm in the past few years and is a sociable way to get fit.

Salsa dancers

Helen McGreary, a freelance dance tutor from Gaerwen, who learnt salsa dance whilst at university in Sheffield, has been teaching since 1999.

"I had been dancing salsa myself for years, and it didn't occur to me until after I had done training courses in Leading Dance in the Community to teach others.

I realised there was a big demand for salsa dancing - it's a really good fun dance form, with moves that you can do on your own or with a partner. The steps are sexy and elegant and the music is really energetic and just makes you want to dance.

Bands like Santana and Jenifer Lopez and many more have raised the profile of Latin music, and the music and the social aspect of dancing adds to its big attraction.

You don't have to be an expert to learn how to dance salsa. Lots of people tell me, 'I've got two left feet, or no rhythmn', but after a few weeks they've got the basics.

Dancing is also a really good way to lose weight, Because it's such fun and you're concentrating on learning something new, you don't realise until the end of the class how much exersise you're doing!"

I have been attending Helen Mcgreary's salsa classes in Anglesey for the past 5 weeks and I'm hooked. It's great. Not having much confidence it took a lot to take the plunge and start attending but I am so pleased I made the decision to go. We have a fantastic time and it is a really great way to have fun and a workout at the same time. Would recommend it to anyone.
