Welcome to Talsarnau

Portmeirion One of the best things about Talsarnau, near Harlech, is the view of Portmeirion (left), according to David, Richard and Dafydd.

The best views in Wales
The views in Talsarnau are truly breathtaking and the views over the estuary are amazing,

There's a tidal island called Ynys Gifftan, and from the top of the island you can see a wonderful looking village called Portmeirion beside Penrhyndeudraeth.

The mountains above Talsarnau are wonderful to look at. You can see Harlech and Pen Llyn, plus you can see the highest mountain in Wales which is Snowdon - this mountain looks beautiful with snow on it.

The people that live in Talsarnau are very caring and friendly, but the only downfall is that there aren't many teenagers living here. This results in a very boring day in Talsarnau. But it's a very nice place to retire.

They have just opened a village hall in Talsarnau which has two snooker tables, a sports hall and a computer room to help with your homework. This village hall helps to bring more people into Talsarnau.

To be honest Talsarnau is a very boring place. But it is a very good place if you know your way around. We have a lake called Llyn Tecwyn that's a very nice place to chill on Sundays.

If you want a nice beach you're better off going to Harlech beach. Portmeirion is also a nice place, it's a little Italian village with shops and a Cadwaladr's shop. Cadwaladr's is the best ice cream in the world.

I have lived in Talsarnau since I was born and I've had an absolutely dazzling time here.

Tal's okay - got its own microclimate - cold when Pwhelli is hot, and hot when Portmeirion is cold - a fair number of walks locally, but the main (!) road is fairly dangerous for walkers, Get to know the area not only geographically but the history and some of the language and you can realise how Tal came about. Ask about the great floods and about Jackie Kennedy coming to Ynys - amazing what you can find out if you try

My grandmother's family came from Talsarnau a couple of generations back and as a child we still went back every Summer to stay in the (very small) cottage on Bryn street that her family built. Lovely memories of Williams garage, the Post Office and the walk up to Llandecwyn past Brynbwbach- and also crossing the railway line to walk on the Traeth- the quietest place I think I have ever known- except for the sheep of course!

I was brought up on a farm called Rhosigor in Talsarnau and have now moved to Penrhyn. I have many fond memories of my childhood in Talsarnau, there was so many things to do, we went swimming in Dolorcan, Ynys Gifftan and the lake. We had our youth club and hall to play snooker and basically we just had a close-knit community and all the children played together like one big family. Today I work for the youth service and to be honest I don't know what is happening to today's young people.

To sum up Talsarnau, it's like the village of the damned! One post office/shop where you have to order bread! What is that all about? We just spent a week based in Talsarnau and never again.

I was rather suprised to read the unfavourable reports about Talsarnau. I spent every summer there as a child and have very fond memories of the place. I still visit every year with my children. There was always a village fete type thing at Caerffynnon where my brothers used to win running races, Mr Davis ran the Butchers and there was a little shop that sold thick wooly jumpers opposite. Mr Griffiths used to deliver the milk and Mrs Griffiths and her mother in the post office always gave us custard tarts and Yorkie bars when we went down to the village each morning before playing in the park by the station. I bought my first car from the Williams brothers who ran the garage. The place was and I'm sure still is full of friendly characters. Always plenty to do, there was a little shed on the way up to Pen y Bryn where we used to play table tennis and we could go fishing at Ynys or try to cross over to the island, lovely walks down to Soar and along to Maes y Neuadd and then who can say that standing on the top of the mountain up by Llandecwyn church is not the most beautiful view in the world? Boring? Never!

Stan from Old Colwyn: Mor Edryn is the house where Richard Hughes the author lived {High Wind in Jamaica, Spider's Palace etc).Talsarnau is a wonderful place if you like scenery, walking, fishing or painting, but perhaps not the most exciting place for teenagers who are looking for a night life.I used to live there and have many wonderful friends there and it still feels like my home.

Aled - are you the Rev TJ Hughes's son? He was minister at Capel Gorffwysfa Penrhyndeudraeth. Happy memories! There are pamphlets about Llandecwyn at the church, and it's on many websites.

To me, the little church on the monutainside of Llandecwyn is wonderful. I have visited several times. What is the history of this place? I could see it from my bedroom in Penrhyn! I remember Talsarnau so well, Mr. Jarvis and Mr. Rowlands the Ministers. The very sad part about Talsarnau is a previous commentator: "To Harad a loz Mae Talsarnau yn le class i fyw! cz ma hi`n fun! Talsarnau city 4eva!!" Is it any wonder wonder that grown-ups despair of the kids of today? Get a life child, and learn to write, or at least type!

I found this site because I was searching for my relatives from about 1900-1910 in Talsarnau. My grandmother lived there. Katharine Kershaw(Kirschenhofer - born 1906, 13th Sept) with her three brothers, Henry, George and John and her parents Gwyneth Owens and Rudolph (?) Kershaw(Kirschenhofer). I would be grateful if anyone has any info on the family. Thanks.
