Theatr Ardudwy, Harlech

Last updated: 04 December 2007

One of Harlech's main attractions is Theatr Ardudwy. Emily from Llanbedr has the inside view on how important it is to the community.

In Theatr Ardudwy in Harlech there are drama lessons every Saturday morning for children from the ages 8 up to 16. I go there to learn and get better at acting and hopefully be good enough to go professional.

It also teaches you how to put stage make-up on backstage, so you have an experience of everything.

Lately, we've been doing some work with a video camera, and we've been learning how to use one, which has been a good experience.

Every Christmas, there are pantomimes based on fairytales, like Snow White, Cinderella and Dick Whittington. These pantomimes are produced and directed by the drama group leaders, and the students get to be involved in it. This gives children the opportunity to act on a stage in front of many people.

I like coming to this group, because I can work with my friends and sometimes meet new people. I try to bring more of my friends to this group, and three of them so far have enjoyed it and have decided to stay.

If this theatre group didn't exist, I don't think I would have enjoyed acting as much as I do now. So thank you, Theatr Ardudwy!

Web team: Since this aricle was written the theatre has changed its name to Theatr Harlech.

I'm part of the Youth Theatre and the shows aren't amateur. Did you see the performance of A Christmas Carol in December 2007? We had loads of adults performing too, and I think that it was a really good performance, and loads of people agreed.

There is a really good theatre in Barmouth, renovated with lottery money. A thriving amateur group (Bermo Arts Club) is crying out for younger people to join them in their various productions. There are also very good professional performances of all sorts courtesy of Night Out scheme and also the September Arts Festival which has something different on stage each night for a week, again all professional. Harlech residents are conspicously absent from all these performances despite local advertising and adverts in the Cambrian News. Come on, you say you love theatre, come and see for yourselves.

I tried to get into the act but they wouldn't let me, but there is a brilliant community theatre group in Criccieth well worth joining and so much fun.

Rwyf yn falch o fod yn aelod o prosiect drama theatr ardudwy dan arweiniad Carys Huw. Ar y funud rydym yn brysur yn ymarfer y sioe Gemau Coeg wedi ei sgriptio gan Mair Tomos Ifans. Dwi wedi cyfarfod fwy o fobl ac dod yn ffrindiau. Dwi'n gael llawer o hwyl ac yn edrych ymlaen at y berfformiad. [I'm glad to be a member of Theatr Ardudwy drama project under the leadership of Carys Huw. At the moment we're busy rehearsing Gemau Coeg scripted by Mair Tomos Ifans. I've met lots of friends, had lots of fum and I'm looking forward to the performance.]

I think that the youth theatre is not great at all. The shows are so amateur and they're not that great either and people say that this club will help them go professional!
