Llangefni Town Football Club was founded back in 1897, but according to archive records, there was a football team in the town in 1892, but this was primarily a chapel-based team.
Llangefni Town Football Club were founder members of the Anglesey Football League when it was formed back in 1897, and they played in it with some distinction for many years, winning the League title six times as well as winning the Dargie Cup twice and the Megan Cup once. The reserves picked up the Junior Cup in 1991/92, but eventually the club accepted promotion into the Gwynedd Football League in 1988/89 season, and in their first season they achieved the treble, winning the League Championship, the Gwynedd Cup and the Eryri Shield, the following season 1989/90 repeating this tremendous feat.
For the 1990/91 season the club accepted promotion into the Tyn Lon Volvo Welsh Alliance Football League where they won the League Championship, the Barritt and Alves Cups, not bad for their first season at this level. They went on to win the Barritt Cup outright after treble success in this competition for seasons 1990/91, 1991/92 and again in 1992/93, they also won the Cookson Cup in 1993/94 and won the Welsh Alliance League Championship four times between 1990/91 and 1998/99, as well as being the only Anglesey team to have won the Football Association of Wales Intermediate Cup back in 1991/92 season.
Between 1994 and 1997 the team were not playing too well and for the start of the 1997/98 season the management committee invited Bryan Owen to take over as team manager, and slowly but surely he managed to turn things around. When the club were invited to make an application to join the Cymru Alliance League for the 1999/2000 season, they moved to the new ground at Talwrn Road, Llangefni.
A great deal of work had to be carried out at the new ground before they could be accepted and, indeed, this has been an ongoing item since the move, aiming to improve facilities every season. Last year floodlights and a new 300-seat stand were installed. It is also planned to replace the small stand near the club house.
The club aimed for a mid-table position in their first season, and eventually finished exactly at halfway in ninth place out of 17. In 2000/2001 they finished as close runners up to Caernarfon Town, and in 2001/2002 season they were again runners up, this time to Welshpool Town, another tremendous achievement by all involved within the club.
In 2002/3 Llangefni were looking to finish in the top six after a dismal start and having a change of manager after half a dozen games. Bryan Owen, the former manager, returned for the remainder of the season and they eventually finished in fourth place, and last season after another bad start, in fifth position.
Llangefni is now in the Welsh Premier League. See their own website (link above right).
