Holyhead is a town with a rich footballing history, from Holyhead FC in the late 1800s to early 1900s, to the glory days of the 1950s and 1960s when the famous Harbourmen rode high on the stage of North Wales football from their base at Cae Mwd on Turkeyshore. Since then, Holyhead has been represented by teams as diverse as the Holyhead Liberals, Holyhead Locos, Holyhead Mountain Rangers and Holyhead Gwelfor Athletic (still keeping a good name for Morawelon and Holyhead in the Anglesey League).
Towards the end of the 1980s, Holyhead had four teams playing in various divisions of the North Wales Coast FA. A group of local football fans, led by Ken Chambers and Gary Williams, saw that efforts needed to be concentrated if a Holyhead football team were ever to carry on the proud tradition of the Harbourmen. Holyhead Hotspur were formed in 1990, the same year that the Cymru Alliance League was created, covering an area from Anglesey in the North West, across to Wrexham and south to Mid Wales.
Throughout the early 1990s, Holyhead Hotspur were meeting with regular success on the field, topping the Anglesey League in the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons and the Gwynedd League in the 1996-97 season. This led to the amalgamation of the five clubs representing Holyhead and the formation of Holyhead Hotspur Reserves and the seven junior teams (playing as Holyhead Hotspurs Peibio) in 1997.
Promotion to the Cymru Alliance league came in 1998 after Hotspur won the Wales Alliance League, the culmination of a meteoric rise through four divisions in just eight seasons. The reserves also saw promotion to the Gwynedd League.
Holyhead Hotspur are still playing in the Cymru Alliance league.
