Isa dent title bid

Arwel Hughes

Last updated: 31 January 2009

In the Cymru Alliance, Llangefni were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by Mynydd Isa who thoroughly deserved a share of the spoils.

John Leonard broke the deadlock early on for them and then Neil Wynne spurned a real chance to double their account. But their hosts restored parity with a fine effort from Darren Thomas. Isa finished the stronger of the two sides and Alan Dawson had two fine opportunities to seal things.

Glantraeth, without a home win to their credit, secured a fantastic 2-1 victory at Ruthin Town who failed to take their chances with Simon Hulse twice being denied by the woodwork. The turning point to this encounter was the introduction of Glantraeth sub Anthony Hughes around the hour mark and almost with his first touch, he beat Ruthin keeper Simon Williams with a low ground shot.

Ruthin were quick to draw level however as Shaun Williams headed home a pin point Liam Jones corner. The visitors were not to be denied however and right at the death a rare handling error by Williams from a Caerwyn Roberts corner was punished and Alan Jones had the easy task of getting a winning goal for Glantraeth.

Gresford Athletic looked well on their way to beating fellow strugglers Llandyrnog United when they were protecting a 2-0 half time lead. Craig Goodwin opened their account as soon as the 7th minute; his tricky footwork inside the 18 yard box clearly baffled the Llandyrnog defence and he had plenty of time to slot the ball low and to the left of keeper Arwel Hughes.(pictured). Craig Williams doubled their account when he turned in a Phil Jones cross after a mix up in the visitors defence.

The second half did belong to Llandyrnog though. They should have levelled in the 72nd minute when Max Peate was harshly adjudged to have fouled Sion Roberts and was dismissed. Ian Dunne screwed the resulting penalty past the right upright. Dunn did atone, pulling a goal back to set up an exciting climax which saw player manager Neil Davies net an injury time equaliser.

Mold Alex just about shaded their local derby with Buckley Town 1-0 but it was not exactly a classic. The game's only goal was scored in the 21st minute. Miles Todd was harshly penalised for a handling offence and Stuart Hayes tucked away the resulting spot-kick past Lewie Macken. Buckley should have salvaged a point when they were awarded a penalty themselves in the 70th minute.

Alun Wynnstanley had denied a goal scoring opportunity with his hand and was subsequently dismissed but Jamie Rogers made a hash of the penalty and missed. Even so, better finishing from Mark Roberts and Liam McNeil could have turned this game around.

Denbigh Town were in total control when Stuart Vernon and Steve Jones gave them a two goal cushion at the break but late efforts from Billy Evans and Darren Hughes turned this game around for Llanfair PG.

Guilsfields pitch was declared unplayable so their clash against Flint Town United was called off.

In the day's only other game, Penrhyncoch went down 1-0 at home against Llandudno who netted a late winner through Jason Sadler.
