Bala avoid a banana skin

James Burgess

Last updated: 28 February 2009

With just eight games left to play, Bala Town took another giant step forward to becoming champions as they overcame their banana skin clash with Flint Town United with flying colours.

Tommy Mutton has made a huge impression after being snapped up from Connah's Quay Nomads and he appears to be netting in every game he plays. He steered Bala into a 14th minute lead following a fine threaded pass from midfielder Dave Cunnah, who then went on and doubled the Bala tally after being set free by the recalled Warren Duckett. In a late siege, Flint did reduce the deficit when Chris Hogg made the most of a poor Bala clearance.

Mold Alex shared four goals and the honours with Glantraeth but the visitors will see this as two points dropped. They were in control and protecting a two goal cushion after they went ahead in the 21st minute following an inch perfect pass by Jarl Glynn which fell at the feet of Anthony Hughes who fired past the advancing keeper. At the end of the first half, James Burgess (pictured) doubled the visitors tally heading home a pin point Caerwyn Roberts corner.

Disaster then struck as Glynn conceded an injury time penalty which was despatched by Mike Roberts. Mold, to be fair, came back strong in the second half and they deservedly pulled level with 20 minutes remaining, when Craig Roberts beat keeper Marc Newbould with a deft header from a corner.

Ruthin Town are improving like a fine wine under the stewardship of Ady Jones and they had a comfortable 3-1 success over Penrhyncoch. Ex Gresford midfielder Shaun Williams steered them into a 37th minute lead and they built on this platform. Mike Garrod weighed in with a second half double salvo, despite Chris Wilkins reducing the deficit late on.

The Holyhead Hotspur versus Buckley game turned out to be something of a damp squib. It had 0-0 written all over it until the game came to life in the 73rd minute. Buckley seemed quite content to sit back and leverage a point from the game. But a penalty conceded by Sean Dodd, who was penalised for a handling offence, livened up this encounter. Marc Evans had no problem converting the spot-kick and with Buckley forced to go looking for an equaliser, Kenleigh Owen with some good link up play by Evans put the game out of reach with a close range header with 3 minutes left.

LEX XI have had a week they will want to put behind them, rapped by the Welsh FA to the tune of £700 for their part in the abandonment of a match at Flint in November. This was the same incident for which they hed five players be banned, and to rub salt in their wounds at the weekend they were spanked 4-1 at Llangefni. The hosts marksmen were Darren Thomas, Kevin Roberts (2) and Mel McGuiness with Simon Smith securing a late consolation goal.

Mynydd Isa came a cropper at Llandudno but they were matching their hosts in every department until the 23rd minute dismissal of Ben McKean. Llandudno became one of the few sides this term who made that extra man count; the Isa defence was breached in the 37th minute by Darren Jones who netted with a 'peach' of volley. Jason Sadler sealed the points with 5 minutes remaining but to be fair, Isa might have had something to show had Danny Farrell and Neil Wynne done better with two clear cut chances.

At long last, Llandyrnog United are off the mark. The 2-1 victory was savoured that little bit more as it was against derby neighbours Denbigh Town. Following a goal-less first half in which Denbigh missed a sackful of chances, Graham Owen broke the deadlock on the hour mark and their was a mighty cheer when Sion T Roberts doubled their account minutes later. A late reply by Ben Hughes was too little too late.

Jekyll and Hyde side Guilsfield failed to protect a first half lead created after Tom Reynolds had converted a 14th minute penalty, but things then went sour. Visitors Llanfairpwll hit back through Ian Burgess and Phil Williams and the win takes them out of the danger zone.
