Glory glory Holyhead Hotspur

Caerwyn Roberts

Last updated: 27 September 2008

What a difference a month makes in football. On the opening day of the campaign LEX XI made mincemeat of Holyhead Hotspur and some of the pundits were quick to have them labelled as the potential whipping boys, but since then they have hardly looked back, winning six games and drawing one.

It was not vintage Spurs by any means, but their rewards in a 1-0 success against Mynydd Isa were rich and they now top the table.

Spurs broke the deadlock in the 10th minute when Curt Williams created a simple opportunity for Ian Williams to fire his side in front. Isa were slow to get into their stride, but they did finish the stronger and they should have at least salvaged a point and would have done had Stuart Wood not fired past the upright and Dean Hardstaff twice been denied by Liam Shannahan.

Llangefni caused the weekend's biggest shock when they returned home from Bala Town with a 3-2 success under their belt. This was all after they had twice fallen behind to goals from Craig Papirynk.

Darren Thomas netted the first leveller and late on in the game and with just five minutes left, Graham Austin rose at the far post to score with a close-range header following a corner.

With minutes remaining, Ywain Gwynydd scored a fine solo goal and it really did prove to be decisive, but there was an ill-tempered end to this encounter and deep into stoppage time Bala's Darrren Hignett and Llangefni's Ady Jones clashed and they were instantly dismissed.

Buckley managed a 2-1 local derby success over Ruthin Town and manager Simon Sedgwick said: "The score does not reflect one little bit our superiority and we probably should have won by a much bigger margin.

"Mitchell Booth netted the first goal with a rocket shot right on the stroke of half time and we were first out of the blocks after the interval as well, when Miles Todd scored with a perfect volley.

"We were guilty of squandering loads of chances and we gifted them a late goal after a reckless challenge by Miles Todd. It resulted in a penalty being conceded with three minutes left which was converted by Lennox Beddows."

Llandudno looked as if they were a team going places and the fact three of the league's most prolific scorers in Jason Sadler, Lee Thomas and Chris Boulton are playing in the same team means goals will always flow.

In the other corner, Gresford can't defend for toffee at the moment and Caerwyn Roberts(pictured) breached their defence early on. Chris Boulton earned himself a penalty after tricking his marker and he fired the resulting spot-kick past Gareth Rowland.

Owen Roberts reduced the deficit, but before Gresford could gather any composure, Lee Thomas had the home defence at sixes and sevens and he restored the Llandudno cushion on the half hour mark.

Gresford, to be fair, came out fighting. How Danny Hughes failed to convert a simple chance on 52 minutes defied logic. Eddie Jones, Mike Pugh and Roberts all threatened for Gresford, but they ran out of steam and Boulton and Gareth Evans completed the Llandudno scoring.

Flint Town United had to work hard for their 1-0 verdict over Denbigh Town. Robbie Chesters broke the deadlock after 12 minutes and the Silkmen were content with soaking up the pressure, but they were forced to live on their nerves for the last 15 minutes of the game after manager Paul Davies had used all three subs and goalkeeper Adam McGhee got carried off with a gash on his knee. However, striker Sean Beck made quite an impact as a stand-in keeper.

Guilsfield really are the league's Jekyll and Hyde side, brilliant one week and then absolutely awful the next, and on Saturday they were dreadful and they got slammed 6-2 by visiting Mold Alex who played the vast majority of the game with 10 men after Owain Roberts was dismissed at the end of the opening half for use of foul and abusive language.

Sam Roberts gave Mold the slight edge at the break, but Ben White was quick to restore parity for the home side. It defied logic how a team with ten men could go on to dominate this encounter.

Dave Pitson, Chris Guy and Pitson again had Guilsfield on the rack and when Stuart Hayes added to their account and sub Sam Davidson chipped keeper Dave Littleford, Guilsfied were out for the count. Danny Graham did manage to reduce the arrears for the hosts.

LEX XI are enjoying their best ever start in the Cymru Alliance and their 3-1 victory over Llandyrnog lifts them into third spot. Gareth Roberts opened their account with a fine shot from distance and he then converted with a spectacular long-range free-kick.

Tom Sharples pegged a goal back only for LEX to move up a gear to make the points safe after Paul Griffiths headed a third goal for LEX from a corner with minutes left.

Penhryncoch were left kicking themselves. They let slip the lead carved out by Tim Turner and late in the game, Dave Jones and Richard Owen put visiting Llanfair PG ahead 2-1, but in injury time, Liam Jones grabbed a late lifeline to salvage a point.
