Bala return to the top

Mike Griffiths

Last updated: 17 January 2009

Bala Town were in riveting form when demolishing Buckley Town in their own back yard on Saturday as they whitewashed their hosts 6-0.

Buckley boss Simon Sedgwick was first to concede, "At times, I must confess it was boys against men and this is one of the best Bala sides I have ever come up against".

Making a huge impression on his debut was Tommy Mutton and he was the architect of Bala's first goal, paving the way for Osian Jones to break the deadlock in the 23rd minute. There was a touch of class about their second goal which was a stunner from 25 yards by Gary Penlington. The hosts were on the ropes after Mutton weighed in with a double salvo and Warren Duckett and sub Marc Griffiths completed the debacle. Bala Town have gone top as a result of Llangefni's goal-less draw at Llandudno.

Flint Town United were back to their best, demolishing Glantraeth 7-1. Glantraeth have announced that manager Gareth Roberts has stood down after the match. Prior to kick off, Sean Beck was presented with his manager of the month award for December and based on his contribution shortly after, his hat-trick could well land him back to back awards as well.

Flint bossed this game throughout and took an 11th minute lead through striker Paul Williams but an own goal from Gareth Owen had Glantraeth on the ropes. The game was over as a conquest by half time when midfielder Paul Williams and Beck had Flint protecting a four goal cushion.

Jack Abrahams and a double salvo from Beck completed the debacle although the visitors did manage to secure an 85th minute consolation goal from Emyr Rowlands.

Guilsfield had an important 3-2 victory over Gresford Athletic to put some daylight between them and the drop zone. Following a goal-less first half, Gresford were really caught napping and a lapse in concentration saw Huw Jones conceding an own goal, Emyr Roberts and James Evans netting two more goals in a mad five minute spell. Gresford did manage to regain their composure and reduced the deficit through Danny Hughes and Craig Goodwin on his debut.

Following a barren first half against Denbigh Town, LEX XI took a 53rd minute lead when a shot from Leighton Roberts took a wicked deflection off Tony Davies, wrong footing his keeper. Davies proved to be the real villain when he was dismissed shortly after for violent conduct following an incident involving Mike Griffiths (Pictured). LEX failed to capitalise on having an extra man and they let Denbigh off the hook when Gareth Martin hit back to salvage a point for the visitors.

Mold Alex were down in the dumps again and as well as getting beaten 3-1 by Ruthin Town, they had one of their most experienced players Gary Burns shown a red card just before the interval. Tom Matischok had a notable debut for Ruthin, sealing victory after Mike Garrod had netted a goal in each half. David Gleave did manage a 66th minute consolation goal for the hosts.

Holyhead Hotspur kept their title dreams alive with a 3-0 victory over strugglers Llandyrnog United who felt this game should never have gone ahead. They question the referee Paul Kewley's wisdom on several occasions throughout the match, which was contested in farcical conditions. Mike Kelly gave Spurs a 15th minute lead following some good work by Ian Williams and they never looked back.

The visitors then had player manager Roger Beech sent off following a stamping incident on the stroke of half time and from then on it was always going to be an uphill battle. When they then had Graham Owen sent off after receiving a second yellow card their hopes of any comeback were truly dashed. Kenleigh Owen set up Kelly to double his personal account and with 10 minutes remaining, Marc Evans scored with a close range header following a fine cross from Dean Garmie.

In the day's only other action, Llanfairpwll beat Penrhyncoch 3-0 with man of the match Richard Owen getting all three of the winner's goals.
