Llangefni keep in touch with the leaders despite the rain

Terry Pugh of Mold Alex

Last updated: 13 December 2008

Heavy overnight rain resulted in five of the eight matches in the Cymru Alliance being postponed due to waterlogged pitches.

Llangefni saw the warning signals midweek that their pitch was unlikely to be playable so they switched their fixture to the ground of their opponents, Penrhyncoch. Despite conceding ground advantage they conjured up a 3-2 success to keep in touch with the leaders.

Ashleigh Stephens provided the Roosters with an 8th minute lead but back came Llangefni through Iwan Jones just 5 minutes later. On the stroke of half time, Kevin Roberts provided the visitors with an interval advantage. Back came Penrhyncoch through Liam Hinton Jones but with the game looking to end in deadlock, Graham Austin snatched a last gasp winner.

Holyhead Hotspur are well aware that maximum points from their games in hand will have them topping the table so it was important they took all the points from their home clash with LEX XI. But Lex failed to follow the script and after dominating the early spoils they took a 20th minute lead through Simon Smith, who had raced into the box unchallenged. Rather than use this as a platform to build on, they had to re-arrange things as midfielder Karl Andrews was soon dismissed following a reckless challenge.

LEX held their own until the 54th minute when they collapsed like a pack of cards. First Ian Williams turned in a Dean Garmie cross, from the restart and Williams doubled his personal tally following some fine probing by Kenleigh Owen. In a five minute purple patch, LEX were on the ropes again after a free-kick from Owen came back off the upright and centre back Lee Webber made no mistake from close range.

Gareth Rhys Roberts gave LEX a glimmer of hope, pegging a goal back with 8 minutes left and sub Leighton Roberts almost squared things but then at the opposite end, Marc Evans put pay to any comeback when he bagged a 4th goal for Spurs.

Mold Alex chalked up a 2-1 victory over bottom side Llandyrnog which will have pleased one or two of the Alyn Park fans who have been critical of their side of late. The result hopefully will silence this small core of boo-boys who appear to have quickly forgotten the fact they have a good man in charge in Danny Seamarks who has taken them from Welsh National League obscurity to a respectable mid table berth in the Cymru Alliance.

He must have been relieved though as well as delighted when Mike Roberts broke the deadlock for Mold in the 32nd minute, atoning for an earlier miss. Llandyrnog made a real scrap of things and on this form look to have sufficient quality to get out of the relegation mire, though Ian Dunn and Endaf Jones were thwarted by man of the match Chris Marland in the heart of the Mold defence.

Despite their territorial advantage, Mold created few clear cut chances but they were able to double their tally in the 80th minute when Dave Gleave was fouled. But the referee waved play on and Terry Pughe raced clear to score. Llandyrnog were able to conjure up a late consolation goal through Tom Sharples.
