Ruthin spoil Llangefni's plans

Liam Jones from Penrhyncoch

Last updated: 07 February 2009

Despite heavy snow storms all week, the Cymru Alliance programme was hardly affected and the only two games which failed to go ahead were Bala versus Mold Alex on Friday night and the local derby match between Flint Town United and Buckley.

There was quite a shock in store for second placed Llangefni who knew maximum points from their home game with Ruthin Town would put them back in top spot. Rated as under-dogs, Ruthin failed to read the script. Manager Adie Jones, who once managed Llangefni when they were a Welsh Premier League side, came with a game plan which worked to perfection. Ben Collins steered them into a 15th minute lead with a close range header from a Liam Jones corner and although they allowed their hosts plenty of possession, keeper Simon Williams was rarely troubled; even though a Mike Edwards hit the crossbar, he had the shot covered. Ruthin finished strong and Simon Hulse and Lennox Beddows both went close.

There was a shock result at Holyhead Hotspur who never ever looked like coming out on top in this one. They only had two shots on target all afternoon. Visitors Guilsfield have showed all season that they can live with the best on their day and there was no doubt they won this game on merit.

They broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Spurs failed to deal with a corner and Sam Thomas thrashed home the clearance with keeper Elliott Smith rooted to the spot. What Spurs did offer was coped with well by Guilsfield keeper Dave Littleford, especially a point blank save from a Lee Webber header. It was no surprise, with Spurs pressing to get something out of the game, Guils broke from deep and Jamie Evans cemented the win.

Llanfairpwll looked down and out when they trailed 3-1 against visitors LEX XI but they turned this encounter right around with two goals deep into stoppage time, leaving LEX boss Colin Parry to bemoan "We just went to sleep and paid a heavy price."

Ex-Wrexham trainee Simon Smith bagged a brace of goals on the half hour mark, just after Gareth Rhys Roberts failed to break the deadlock firing a penalty chance wide. Richard Owen pegged a goal back just prior to the interval.

LEX took charge again in the second half when player coach Gareth Rhys Roberts atoned for an earlier miss when he scored from deep with a clever chip as he spotted the keeper ofr his line. In a late sortie, Llanfair pulled of what appeared to be the impossible; Kevin Frazer reduced the areears and Phil Williams equalised with the last kick of the match.

Glantraeth were not able to take their form from last week into this weekend's home clash with Mynydd Isa, who were worthy 2-0 winners. They broke the deadlock in the 3rd minute when an inch perfect cross from Stuart Wood was met by Anthony Williams.

Anthony Hughes and David Alan Jones failed to make good chances count prior to John Leonard adding to the Isa tally in the 63rd minute following some good work by Joe Desormeaux. Isa also finished the stronger and a snap shot from Paul Connolly was denied by the cross bar.

Denbigh Town seemed to be coping well at Llandudno but two goals in a purple patch near the end of the game by Lee Thomas and Chris Boulton allowed their hosts to snatch maximum points.

Llandyrnog were left kicking themselves; Endfaf Jones gave them a 15th minute lead at Penrhyncoch and it stayed that way until the 78th minute when Liam Jones (pictured) levelled. This gave the hosts a fresh impetus and Sion Meredith bagged a last gasp winner for Penrhyncoch.
