Bala and Holyhead defy the downpour

Colin Caton

Last updated: 06 September 2008

With it being International weekend, football throughout Wales in tiers one, two and three came to a grinding halt so every attempt was made to switch the Cymru Alliance programme to the Friday evening.

In the history of the league however, I don't think anyone can recall such torrential rain in the first weekend in September which saw all but two fixtures being wiped out due to waterlogged pitches.

There were two exceptions though; Bala managed to get their game with Guilsfield played and they 'stormed' to a 5-1 victory. Wes Brereton volleyed them in front after just 4 minutes, making an immense impression after being snapped up from LEX is Gary Penlington. He doubled Bala's account following a well rehearsed free-kick from Craig Papirnyk and he headed home unmarked on the far post.

Brereton doubled his personal tally to secure his side's third goal with 39 minutes gone and after Darren Hignett gave the hosts a four goal cushion at the break, Guilsfield looked out for the count. There was a touch of optimism that Guilsfield would improve after Sam Thomas pegged a goal back but Gethin Lloyd cemented the Bala success with a 55th minute penalty.

Bala boss Colin Caton had reasons to be delighted as earlier in the day, League General Secretary Chas Rowland had announced that he was manager of the month for August with his side being unbeaten. Brereton In the only other game to get the green light, Holyhead Hotspur seem to have put behind them that temporary blip and the nightmare whitewash at LEX on the opening day of the campaign. Their narrow 3-2 victory over Denbigh Town has enabled them to move into second spot in the league. Marc Evans steered the hosts into a 4th minute lead and it stayed that way until the break. Denbigh to their credit improved immensely after the break and deservedly pulled level after Kenny Burgess was bundled over in the box and up he stepped to convert the resulting penalty. Hesitancy in the Spurs defence was punished when Burgess seized the opportunity to nip in and score from close range.

In a dramatic finale however Spurs pulled level in the 84th minute when Mike Edwards crossed for Ian William to convert and with time running out, Evans was fouled just inside the box and he grabbed a last gasp winner from the resulting penalty. Evans had a double reason for celebrating as he had been awarded the Player of the Month for August.
