Buckley almost buckle in the cup

Marc Gunther

Last updated: 04 October 2008

All games involving Cymru Alliance sides went in the main to plan, though Brickfield and Llay Welfare came mighty close to achieving a giant killing act.

Had Brickfield not had goalkeeper Andy Ruscoe dismissed early on in the second half things might have turned out differently. Pat Oliver's Brickfield side took an early lead through Nathan Jones but Mark Roberts broke from deep to pull Buckley level. Joe Garner put the visitors ahead but back came Brickie through talented teenager Nathan Buckley. Sean Dodd's cross was converted by Mitchell Booth to restore Buckley lead but plucky Brickfield got back on level terms once more through Nathan Buckley. With extra time looming, Garner scored with a wonderful goal worthy of winning any match. Buckley now host Airbus UK in the next round.

Llay Welfare felt hard done by at Holyhead Hotspur, claiming goalkeeper Kevin Jones had been impeded handling a right wing corner and the loose ball was stabbed home by Lee Webber with 17 minutes gone. Playing with the wind, Kenleigh Owen, Dean Garmie and Curt Williams all carved out clear cut chances which Jones was equal to.

Llay coped well with the windy conditions and Robbie Nevitt went close to equalising on the stroke of half time and then Webber had a goal disallowed for offside. In a moment of madness, Dean Garmie was dismissed following an elbowing incident and Spurs were down to ten men. Llay came into the game and deservedly levelled through Matiousz Prochenka with a stunning shot from 20 yards out. It all ended in tears for Llay in the end when sub Darren Garmie netted the winning goal in the 81st minute after keeper Kev Jones was harshly adjudged to have clipped Mike Kelly. To rub salt into the wound the visitors then had Dave Massey dismissed for dissent.

Flint Town United looked sheer class as they accounted for below par Mold Alex 4-0. Jack Abrahams was the jewel in their crown, getting the final touch to a Paul Davies free-kick to open their account in the 25th minute. He doubled his personal tally from the penalty spot and from that same incident sub Craig Roberts was shown the red card for a handling offence. He then completed his treble with a fiercely struck shot from distance in the 68th minute.

The game was out of reach for Mold who conceded a calamity of an own goal following a mix up between James Collins and Gavin Williams.

Bala Town packed in a sturdy performance. After 90 minutes and extra time, the score was 3-3 and all of this was after they had taken a 2-0 lead through Llion Roberts and Gary Penlington with just 10 minutes gone. It was a feisty affair and full of incident. Bala had Steve Fisher dismissed for a handball incident but player boss Neil Fisher made a hash of the resultant spot-kick. But the visitors did find the net through Mike Parker on the stoke of half time.

Prestatyn then had Jon Fisher Cooke and Andy Davies 'red-carded' but despite being a man down they managed to level through Ian Griffiths to take the tie into extra time. Griffiths then provided Prestatyn with the initiative but plucky Bala managed a deserved equaliser when Osian Jones levelled with a superbly struck free-kick. In the resultant penalty shoot out Prestatyn kept their nerve with Dave Hayes converting the decisive spot-kick.

Denbigh Town dumped out Chirk AAA's 4-1 and LEX XI sneaked through 2-1 against Glan Conwy.

Llangefni Town's Chris Williams and Danny Roberts put the hosts in control and Darren Thomas ensured they did not provide any way back for visiting Llanfair PG.

Penrhyncoch were left chasing the game when they trailed 2-0 at home to Maesteg Park. But they pegged things back to 2-2 and then managed an extra time winner.

Guilsfield had the audacity to take a 2-1 lead against TNS through Simon Edwards and Llion Davies. The Premier League leaders had earlier netted with a close range header from Jon Toner but an Alex Darlington double salvo earned them a Round 3 date with Penrhyncoch.

Gresford Athletic made hard work of accounting for Rhydymwyn, though this game was spoiled by the wind. The visitors made this advantage pay and they took a 23rd minute strike through Marc Gunther. With the wind behind them after the break, Gresford pulled level when a wind assisted freekick from Gareth Williams sailed over the head of Danny Stanton. In the extra time that followed, Gresford made their experience count when Owen Roberts bagged a brace of goals and Max Peate converted a penalty after Craig Williams was fouled. Gresford now entertain Prestatyn in the next round.

Just two Cymru Alliance league games survived and Mynydd Isa secured a 2-0 success against Ruthin Town, who opened their account in the 6th minute when Kevin Breeze beat Ben Jones from the edge of the box. Back came Isa to take control when Joe Desormeux and Paul Connelly hit back. Ruthin were back on level terms courtesy of a well struck free-kick from Liam Jones. But the home side's cheers had not died down when Dean Hardstaff was set free by Anthony Williams. He beat Simon Williams in the Ruthin goal, which it proved decisive.

Llandyrnog have still not managed to break their duck as they shared a 1-1 draw with Glantraeth. Elfyn Roberts did provide the hosts with a 33rd minute lead but Glantraeth replied on the stroke of half time through Gerallt Jones.
