Lex claim prize Porthmadog scalp

Ian Griffiths from Prestatyn

Last updated: 01 November 2008

Cup football inevitably provides an upset and this weekend was no exception when minnows LEX XI from the Cymru Alliance dumped out Welsh Premier outfit Porthmadog.

What made the result even more surprising was the fact LEX were without leading scorer Keiran Jones and player coach Gareth Roberts who has been such an inspiration this season. LEX shaded the first half with Michael Latham and striker Leighton Roberts both going agonisingly close and Aaron Edwards being denied by the upright. They did manage to break the deadlock in the 53rd minute when central defender Paul Griffiths powerfully headed home unmarked a Kosh Hermfatin corner past the visitors keeper Dave Vickers.

Heads dropped in the visitors camp after LEX were gift-wrapped a second goal in the 63rd minute when referee Mike Jones deflected the ball into the path of Aaron Edwards who scored with a low drive from the edge of the box. Rather than sit back and defend, LEX continued to press forward and only a brilliant save from Vickers denied Simon Smith from making it 3-0. LEX ran out worthy winners and have earned themselves a trip to Bridgend.

Joining LEX in the next round are league leaders Holyhead Hotspur who secured a Round 4 berth following a narrow 2-1 victory over the unknown Pentwyn Dynamos. This was not vintage Holyhead by any means but the score fails to demonstrate the territorial advantage they had.

Ian Williams and Kurt Williams both spurned good chances early on but the game did burst into life in the 12th minute when Marc Evans was given plenty of time to take his chance to break the deadlock. The Dynamo's showed plenty of character and almost from the restart pulled level when a Dave Cachia header beat Liam Shanahan from close range. Spurs restored their lead in the 33rd minute when a Darren Garmie corner was flicked on by Tom Jones but Evans got the final touch. Spurs shut up shop to earn a home tie with Newport YMCA in the next round.

Gresford Athletic put behind them a dismal run in the league to almost cause another stir, their gallant efforts had them just seconds away from earning themselves a penalty shoot out against Welsh Premier opposition Porthmadog. Lady luck however did desert them in the end when, with moments left on the clock, Dave Parker bagged a last gasp winner.

The performance must have given Gresford manager Sam Ainge much satisfaction as his side more than held their own despite trailing to an Ian Griffiths (pictured)goal at the break. Danny Hughes did manage to pull Gresford level, forcing the ball home following a goal-mouth melee on the hour mark but Prestatyn restored their lead in the 80th minute when an angled drive from Russ Jones took a deflection to beat Gareth Rowland in the Gresford goal.

The hosts refused to surrender and deservedly restored parity through teenager Levi Roberts, who broke free on the right to shoot powerfully under the body of Prestatyn keeper John Dunt. In the extra time that followed both sides had ample opportunities to make their mark and it was Parker who had the last say to break the hearts of the Gresford faithful.

Flint Town United were left cursing their luck as they were dumped out 1-0 at Llwydcoed, the lowest ranked side still in the competition. Penrhyncoch were thrashed 7-1 at TNS and there was worse in store for Denbigh Town who were whitewashed 7-0 at Port Talbot.

On the Friday evening, Buckley were second best to a class Airbus outfit who won this tie with ease 5-1. Mitchell Booth netted a lone consolation goal from the penalty spot but to add to their woes, Buckley had striker Alan Dawson dismissed for violent conduct.

Due to the Welsh Cup there was a shortened Cymru Alliance schedule of games but Bala Town were able to extend their lead at the top to six points following their 2-0 success at Guilsfield. The hosts were the brighter of the two sides in the opening half and James Evans and Gareth Jones were guilty of some poor finishing. Bala rode their luck and finished the stronger side by far; Gary Penlington broke the deadlock with 10 minutes left and Wes Brereton put the game beyond reach 5 minutes from time.

Mynydd Isa's 100% home record was within a whisker of being taken but a saved penalty minutes from time by Ben Jones kept the record intact as Llandyrnog finished with a flourish. Isa struck in the 30th minute with a fine finish from Anthony Williams and when Danny Farrel doubled their account with 20 minutes left, getting his first goal for the club, Isa almost committed suicide. Stuart Wood conceded a needless penalty by chopping down Rhys Llwyd which Ben Jones saved. When Tom Sharples did reduce the deficit with 5 minutes remaining, Isa were left hanging on for grim death.

Despite being in charge for most of their game against visiting Llanfairpwll, Mold Alex only had a point to show for their labours. Somewhat against the run of play, Dave Jones provided the visitors with an interval lead. It would have been a travesty had Mold come out of this game empty handed but they did salvage a point when the recalled Stuart Hayes equalised with 12 minutes remaining.

Llandudno sentenced Glantraeth to their 7th defeat of the season as they went down 2-1. Still looking to break their duck, Glantraeth started sprightly and Kevin Roberts put them ahead with just 6 minutes gone. He netted at the second attempt after his first effort had been saved by keeper Sean Pearson. The hosts responded in fine fashion and levelled in the 26th minute through Jason Sadler after Caerwyn Roberts had paved the way. It was a cruel way for Glantraeth to lose this game but the winner came in the 50th minute when a tame shot from Chris Boulton was deflected to the unmarked Gareth Evans whose shot crept just inside the post.
