Wind blows out key games

Gareth Martin

Last updated: 25 October 2008

Bala Town are the new Cymru Alliance leaders following their 2-0 win over Glantraeth, with rivals Holyhead having their game against Buckley cancelled due to gale force winds. Llangefni had their clash with Mynydd Isa wiped out for the same reason.

Bala Town were made to work extremely hard for their rewards, with Glantraeth matching them for most of this encounter. In the opening period, though, it was all Bala and they took a deserved 22nd minute lead through Craig Papirnyk after a spell of intense pressure and twice being denied by the woodwork.

The visitors refused to surrender and fought back well, but left to throw caution to the wind and an error by keeper Mark Newbould gifted Bala a second goal when a shot from Gary Penlington slipped through his hands.

Gales also prevented the Llandudno versus Llandyrnog game from being a spectacle, but both sides did their best to adapt. Chris Boulton and Jason Sadler showed up well for Llandudno, but they found their match in Gwyn Peters and Gareth Evans.

Following a goal-less first half, Llandudno went ahead when a weak effort from Gareth Evans squirmed past 'Dyrny keeper Arwel Hughes. Rhys Llwyd, Geraint Jones and Anthony Marshall all offered the visitors cause for optimism, but to put the game beyond reach, Jason Sadler converted a late penalty after he had been tripped by Mike Sharples.

Gresford Athletic continue to prop up the rest, but they really are short of luck. To be fair there was a huge improvement in their showing, but they must stop making defensive blunders if they are to retain their Cymru Alliance status.

Gareth Rowland pulled off a breathtaking save from Calvin Davies early on, but he had no answer to the burly striker who broke from deep to give Denbigh a 30th minute lead.

Gareth Martin (pictured) doubled the visitors' account following another gaff, but from that point onwards it was Gresford that showed up the best. Despite having most of the territorial advantage after the break they could not add to a 70th minute effort carved out by Mike Pugh.

Ruthin Town thought their clash at Stansty Park was going to be a cakewalk after Kevin Breeze and Will Roberts had provided them with a two-goal cushion against LEX XI who were protecting an unbeaten home record.

On the half hour mark, LEX pulled a goal back when player coach Gareth Roberts converted a penalty and Mike Latham soon had LEX level. Ruthin, to be fair, just shaded the second half and were rewarded with the winner eight minutes from time scored by Lennox Beddows.

Flint Town United were back to their best and they chalked up a thrilling 5-2 success at Penrhyncoch who took a ninth minute lead through Sion Meredith. Steve Hughes levelled for the visitors on the stroke of half time to set the scene for top scorer Sean Beck to write all of the headlines after he converted a well contrived hat-trick. Jon Hill completed the rout with Meredith reducing the arrears at the death.

Llanfairpwll shared a 1-1 draw with Guilsfield, but this encounter had 'goal-less' draw written all over it until the 66th minute when Richard Owen provided the hosts with an unexpected lead, then late in the game, Dan Graham hit back to earn Guilsfield a deserved point. Phil Jones
