LEX excel and Spurs flop

Paul Griffiths of LEX XI

Last updated: 09 March 2009

The key action at the weekend was is in the Cymru Alliance League Cup and LEX XI could be on the verge of capturing the trophy for a record third time after demolishing Holyhead Hotspur 6-0.

And the hosts had enough chances to have taken the score into double figures. They had already slammed Spurs in their opening day of the campaign 5-0, so this again was a result to savour.

LEX were quick out of the traps and went 2-0 up at the break with goals from Michael Latham and Aaron Edwards and the opener from Latham was a text book affair with him ending a move involving six LEX players.

Spurs regrouped after the break and pushed centre back Lee Webber into attack and played three at the back. This played into LEX's hands with Spurs keeper Elliott Smith forced into making several decent saves.

An exquisite volley from Paul Griffiths had Spurs reeling and in the end it was one-way traffic. A close range header by Gareth Roberts and further strikes from Griffiths and Edwards completed the whitewash.

Also securing a place in the semis were Ruthin Town who threw away a 2-0 half-time lead created by Simon Hulse and Mike Garrod. Isa came out all guns blazing after the break and pulled a goal back through Paul Connolly following some good work by Anthony Williams.

From being provider, Williams got Isa back on level terms following a goalmouth scramble, but in a late sortie Mike Robinson scored a stunning goal worthy of winning any tie with eight minutes remaining.

Competition favourites Bala Town had a comfortable 2-0 passage at Denbigh Town. Gary Penlington struck after just eight minutes turning in a pinpoint cross from Mark Harris. Dave Cunnah sealed the victory with a late penalty after a foul on Alec Stacey.

Flint Town crashed out at Guilsfield and this really was an even affair. Both teams missed chance after chance, so the game had to go into extra time. Tommy Reynolds was upended by a Flint defender and up he got and converted the resulting penalty for Guilsfield to go through.

Buckley Town were the day's surprise package. After a poor run of results they kick-started their campaign with a fantastic 2-1 win against Llandudno.

John Dowridge broke the deadlock after just five minutes and, with half an hour gone, Buckley doubled their account with an unbelievable goal from Jamie McNeil.

Llandudno came back strong and under pressure, Jamie Rogers conceded a 38th minute which was despatched by Jason Sadler, but Buckley defended in numbers and held out.

Llandyrnog have now won two games on the bounce and they beat fellow strugglers Gresford Athletic 1-0. There was not a lot to choose between the two sides, but when Gresford had Wyn Jones dismissed for an over-zealous challenge the hosts took charge and took a 50th minute lead through Sion Roberts.

Things then really did go to pot and referee Martin Wiliiams saw fit to give Steve Rowland a red card after consulting with his linesman.

Although they only had nine men, believe it or not Gresford finished the stronger and had Craig Goodwin been slightly more accurate with his finishing, Gresford might have got something out of this game.

Glantraeth are back to winning ways. They thrashed neighbours Llanfairpwll 4-1. They had a dream start when Kevin Roberts provided them with a sixth minute lead heading home a pinpoint Adam Jones free-kick.

The lead was quickly cancelled out, however, by former player Darren Hughes with Tony Williams the provider. Although it was all square at the break, Anthony Hughes restored the hosts' lead with a lofted shot over Ben Heald in the Llanfair goal.

Glantraeth then gained in stature and Chris Evans converted a 61st minute penalty following a foul on Emyr Rowlands. Rowlands was then given his chance to seal victory and he also converted a late penalty.

Llangefni moved to within four points of the leaders Bala Town after defeating Penrhyncoch 3-0. Darren Thomas netted a goal in each half and sandwiched in between was a fine strike from Mel McGuiness. By Phil Jones
