Llangefni clinch Bala double

Dan Billington

Last updated: 04 April 2009

Match of the day was at Llangefni Town where the home team turned out party poopers and ended Bala Town's dreams of going all season without losing away from home.

Bala flopped to a 2-0 defeat, but they still have enough of an advantage to win this league by a country mile. The hosts scored a goal in each half through Geraint Mitchell and Darren Thomas to take maximum points to secure a rare double over Bala.

Glantraeth were left cursing their luck and, trailing 2-1 with minutes to go, they were forced to throw caution to the wind to at least salvage a point.

But they were punished and exposed by hosts Mynydd Isa who then added two further goals to their tally to kill the game off.

Sam Pugh steered Isa into a second minute lead after Glantraeth failed to deal with a long throw into the box. The visitors were able to cancel out the lead through Gareth Owen after some good work by James Burgess.

On the hour though, Isa restored their lead when Barry Calder broke from deep to beat the off-side trap. In that frantic finish, Danny Farrell and Alan Dawson broke the visitors' hearts, but in stoppage time Gareth Roberts reduced the defecit.

Holyhead Hotspur secured a comfortable 3-1 win over Mold Alex and they never really looked back after Marc Evans scored with a looping header from a Mike Kelly free-kick on seven minutes.

Soon afterwards Kelly again supplied the ammunition for Curt Williams to double their tally, but it did take a wicked deflection off Sam Roberts so it is likely this will be credited as an own goal.

Stuart Hayes was lively for Mold and clearly their best player and he was twice denied by keepr Mike Doutch. Chris Guy did manage to reduce the arrears and from wide out on the left he rifled a fine shot past Doutch on the near post.

Evans, Kelly, Lee Webber and Gareth Caughter all went close for the hosts before Curt Williams scored with a bullet header from a pinpoint cross by Marc Evans. To add to Mold's woes, Brett Jones was shown a second yellow so Mold then finished with ten men.

Ruthin Town have been in freefall of late and they wasted chance after chance to send Gresford Athletic crashing with Mike Garrod and Lennox Beddows wasting several good opportunities to beat Gareth Rowland.

Gresford had a good shout for a penalty turned down when Tim Steele appeared to have been impeded and, as so often happens, missed chances proved costly and Gresford got an injury time winner through Darren Jones.

Guilsfield really have been the league's Jekyll and Hyde side and another inconsistent performance saw them going down 2-0 at home to Llandudno who had Toby Jones netting two early goals.

Penrhyncoch secured three much-needed points against LEX XI, but a rare error by keeper Dan Billington saw him fumble a Tony Jones shot into his own net.

Llyr Hughes extended their lead with a free-kick from distance. LEX finished the game with ten men when Carl Andrews was shown a red card for use of foul and abusive language, but LEX had the last word, reducing the arrears through Gareth Rhys Roberts with five minutes remaining.

Llandyrnog United look destined to finish with the wooden spoon and they were sunk 2-0 by Flint Town who secured a goal in each half through Phil Lloyd and Shaun Beck.

Buckley Town looked in command when Adam Renshaw gave them a half-time advantage at Llanfairpwll who turned the tables to win 2-1 and this will hopefully help stave off relegation. The hosts' marksmen were Terry Williams and Richard Owen who netted in the 51st and 54th minute respectively. By Phil Jones
