"This is the Maeshyfryd Fruit and Veg Club. We take £2 off people each week and for that we go out and buy whatever we can get. We get all the produce through a deal with a stand-alone fruit and veg guy in Holyhead, so we're keeping it local and we know that all the food we get is fresh that day.
We meet every Wednesday morning at the Millbank building. Anyone can pop in and they'll be most welcome, even if it's just for a chat, to see what courses we're able to access and have a cuppa and a biscuit, or help out as a volunteer.
People do come up to us and say 'We're having a problem using all this veg', and we can help them with ideas. Or people say 'My kids are eating all this fruit and veg and they're losing weight' - that's a real buzz.
We also use the carrier bags for advertisements so if you've got something to share with the community, like a healthy eating recipe or event, we have got 70 bags each week which go into 70 households. But we are very much mindful of the type of advertising we accept. It has to be a feel-good project or something that will help the community.
The club also delivers the food to old or infirm people who aren't able to come out and through that has come companionship. Now we also hold local health board walks, especially with Penucheldre and Llysmair sheltered housing.
Each of us volunteers gets a lot out of this - far more than we put in. It's not just putting fruit and veg in bags - there's a real feel-good factor.
Personally, I had a very bad speech impediment and 18 months ago I did an intense speech therapy course and part of the after-work from that was to get out and meet with different people and speak to them. So it's very much part of my recovery as a stammerer to get out into the community as a volunteer. I would never have been able to stand here and talk to the BBC before - it's another tick in the box for me.
The whole ethos is to come and have some fun, and whilst you're having fun put some spuds in a bag, make a cup of tea and sit and talk to someone who pops in and wants to chat. You'll find people here you haven't seen for years or you'll make new friends. Just give as much time as you can.
There's a feel-good factor in Holyhead now - behind every door there's a potential volunteer. It doesn't matter what you do, just volunteer and do something, put that feel-good factor back into the town and you'll get something out of it."
