Kim finds her father

Kim Krajewski-Moore at Colwyn Bay Library

Last updated: 22 May 2007

A visit to Colwyn Bay Library ended in tears of surprise, delight and sadness for one customer.

Kim Krajewski-Moore of Colwyn Bay had gone along to a family history information day at the library, hosted by Radio Wales's Look Up Your Genes as part of BBC Wales's Here For You season in the town.

She'd never known anything about her birth father - she'd only known his name from a handwritten adoption certificate, and wasn't sure of the spelling as the writing was difficult to decipher.

She'd been told that his family had come over from Poland as a result of the war, but she knew little else because her parents had been very young when they got married - her mother was 16 and her father 19, and they divorced soon after. When she tried to find out about her father she said she'd encountered brick walls at every turn.

So she was delighted when Look Up Your Genes presenter Cat Whiteaway was able to trace records at the library, via family history sites on the internet.

The sad news was that her father had died in 2002, but nevertheless tracing him at all was a breakthrough for Kim, who said she was overwhelmed by finally seeing his name in print. She's now eager to find out much more.

Over 60 people came to the Look up your Genes day. One of the websites they looked at was ancestry.com which can now be used free of charge in Conwy libraries.

For more information on tracing family history and using ancestry.com contact your local library or telephone 01492 532358.
