Jackdaws on wheels

Motorbike wheel

Last updated: 16 January 2006

John Williams from Mochdre recalls what teenagers got up to in Conwy in the 1960s. If you were in the club, let us know.

"In 1963/64 I was a member of the Jackdaws - the Vale of Conwy Scooter Club.

A group of us with scooters, motorcycles and even bubble cars would meet up in the tower of the town hall, behind the Bluebell Inn and overlooking the harbour. We'd organise runs out all over North Wales - it was our little bit of independence.

I don't think it would be so easy for such an assortment of vehicles to go out on the road together these days - we must've been a real spectacle!

We didn't really wear leathers - just a crash helmet, overcoat and maybe some hob nailed boots - we weren't that fashion conscious!

We were mostly aged between 17 and 20 and got on with making our own entertainment. There wasn't that much to do then but we kept out of trouble.

One time, on Derek Cross's 21st birthday, we carried his Little Bantam motorbike up the stairs and laid it on the table for the party!

Conwy was a bit different then. There was The Palace picture house which I think is a restaurant now. There were also the spring and autumn fares which would take over the town, from the traffic lights to the harbour. It was a lovely little harbour town.

Some of the Jackdaws still meet up sometimes and talk about getting together properly again but it's never happened - maybe it will one day.

If any of you out there remember the club, get in touch with the site - it would be great to hear from you."

Yes - it's me, the guy who had the BSA Bantam motorbike and yes I do so well remember my 21st birthday! The days of the Jackdaws club were such good days and so so many fond memories of the many laughs we all had - and of all the guys and girls who met up every Wednesday night and had a 'run out' every Sunday. John (the writer of this article) and myself were good mates and were known as the terrible two - rarely were we seen without the other in tow on our small motorbikes - good old days! - and yes I hope we do manage to meet up again soon and share our memories of those times. I even have photos of us on our scooters etc and the clubhouse behind the Blue Bell pub.
