My father was evacuated to your town in the second world war and would like to find out if there are any records of him, his sister and brother eg. where they were living and the school they attended.

To Colin, Altringham - Llewelyn ap Ieorwerth* (Edward in English) founded an abbey on the site some years before the English invasion of 1282. It was his grandson Llewelyn ap Gryffudd that Edward I defeated. Edward I saw the strategic importance of the site, turfed all the monks out to Maenen(on the A470) and built the castle, but it is Llewelyn who founded the site, many of the old Welsh nobility are buried around the church (unfortunately unmarked graves) and Edward I kept the old abbey church we see today for a place of worship.

A recent television programme showed the statue in the square in Conwy, but said it was of Llewellyn the Great. I was astonished: I always thought it was of King Edward who built the castle. ???

I'm looking for interesting tales, stories, myths or legends from the town of Conwy. They can be from any era. I'm actually sat in Conwy library and although everyone is very helpful I can't find any good yarns! Can anyone help? where can I find a tale to tell about Conwy?

I wonder if anyone knowns any history of Vardre Hall in Conwy (straight across from the castle - the knight shop) as I live above the shop and would love to know the history of the building (as to be honest we're pretty sure it's haunted); hope to hear from someone soon. Cheers.

Does anyone know of any pool teams, or cribbage teams around here. I have recently moved from Cambridgeshire, where i used to play pool and cribbage on a regular fixture, and can`t find anything around here!

To Delwyn: Conwy folk music club is a great place to meet others who are experts or just learning musical instruments. Their Monday night meetings in the Malt Loaf pub are great fun.
Webteam: The folk club is listed in our
music webguide.

I have inherited a painting from my parents by an artist named Josiah Clinton Jones. Apparently this artist was born 1848, died 1936. He was active in Conwy and did many paintings of country scenes. He was a member of the Royal Cambrian Society and has paintings in the following museums: Blackburn, Liverpool, Moel Siabod and Snowdon. My painting is of Conwy Castle. There are several schooners anchored in the forefront of the painting. Apart from this I have no other information about the painting or the artist. I thought somebody local might have more information regarding this artist.

Pen Y Bryn Tea Rooms on Conwy High Street (near the top on the left). Excellent Welsh rarebit, scones and home made cakes and a great Welsh breakfast.

Conwy is easy to walk around, while you are looking for a decent cafe. Lots of people go to the Clemmence Restaurant but I have never been in it. If you have the library on your left and Aberconwy House (National Trust) on your right walk along the street, which is one way, towards the castle, as you get to the end of the street, look left and you will see a tower with steps up to it, plus a small garden the cafe may not be ok but you will have lovely views of the River Conwy and the surounding area. It may be closed because of the summer season closures! There are loads of cafes in Conw! y. Take your pick. Ask a local. If you get chance, walk through the cemetery but circle the church and you will find a gravestone/grave with the inscription WE ARE SEVEN. Wordsworth was inspired by this gravestone to write the poem WE ARE SEVEN - and since this is Poetry Week. What a lovely thing to do. There are loads of querky and old things interesting in and around the town walls of Conwy. The Mail Coach pub is supposed to be the oldest pub within the town walls.
