Conwy's most haunted

Aberconwy House - National Trust

Last updated: 06 April 2009

Ken Grover from Conwy tells us about the spooky goings on in Aberconwy House. Have you ever felt the presence of its ghosts? Do you think Conwy is the region's most haunted town? Let us know.

"Aberconwy House is the oldest recorded house of its kind anywhere in Wales. Parts of the house date back to the 1300s, and we've got a completion date of the upper storey for the early 15th century.

It's decorated in the style of three different periods in history. The great loft upstairs is in the Jacobean style, some rooms are as they would have been in Georgian times and, as the house was part of a temperance hotel in the 19th century, some parts are Victorian in style.

The house generally belonged to various English merchants who traded with the Welsh - who weren't allowed to live within the walls of Conwy.

Evan David was the first owner and it's reputedly his wife that members of the public have seem near the fireplace in the great loft. Some volunteers won't go up there as they get prodded by something, and there's sometimes a smell of flowers up there.

On one occasion, I personally followed a gentleman in Victorian dress down the Victorian corridor - he then just disappeared. We've christened him Mr Jones, because between 1850 and 1880, a Mr Jones lived here with his lady wife, who was some 20 years younger than him. He died on the same day his seventh child was born and we tend to think it's him haunting the Victorian corridor.

We hear floorboards creaking and doors rattling all the time. The house can be quite spooky, especially in the winter as we have no overhead lighting.

Once I returned to pick up my umbrella which I'd left in the house after work, but the kitchen door just swung on its hinges and slammed in my face. I almost decided to walk home in the rain and get soaked instead of going inside!"

To day we went to Plas Mawr and we were told about the ghost. The lady said she did not believe it but i do. I would not spend the night there on my own.

Anyone visiting Conwy should ask Margaret Wms at the Smallest House for a copy of her booklet about the ghosts of Conwy - she too has seen them (I haven't but then I only notice book-lovers). Also the summer months usually see evening ghost tours around the town.

My first part-time job was working in the NT shop at Aberconwy House when it first opened (before the museum was open and quite a while after it opened to the public). I remember the museum was always shut to the public on Wednesdays but the shop was open and the only way to get up to the stock room (which was in the loft) was through a door at the back of the shop which took you up to the rest of the house. One Wednesday my work partner and I heard footsteps above us (very distinct - on the wooden floor); we assumed that a member of the public who had been in the shop had gone through the door up to the museum, not realising that it was closed. I went up, searched both floors while my partner kept an eye on the door, but I couldn't find anyone and was puzzled when my partner said no-one had come down (that door is the only way in and out when the museum is shut). Strangely, I had caught a strong blast of perfume in the last room on the top floor! I found the incident strange and I occasionally felt like someone was watching me when I was in the stock room on my own; no-one ever mentioned if there were ghosts there but I was there in the early days of its life as a place open to the public. I came across this site when my daughter asked me if I had had any ghostly experiences, so I told her about this, then we checked the web site to see if there was any mention of ghosts - and surprise, surprise...spooky!

I have felt something at the castle when I visited this year. I felt my arm being pulled back in one of the towers.

I was a past employee at Aberconwy and plates were moved on the display every night with the pens being moved as well. The little buggers made my job a little more challenging. I had my hair platted in the Victorian bedroom and footsteps were heard all the time.

I came on holiday to north Wales with my mum, sisters and grandparents. We visited Aberconwy house because it was National Trust. When we were coming down from the first floor, my mum tripped over nothing and sprained her ankle. That might not prove any thing to u but it does to me!

That's an interesting story. I have heard that the UK was one of the most haunted countries but I didn't know Conwy was the most haunted of Wales. My house used to be haunted until we had it blessed by a priest. I would hear foot steps and what not down the corridor. And at that time I was quite young, so as you can imagine it scared the hell out of me. There are still times I feel someone watching me. Freaky, huh?
