reviews the mayor's surprise visit: "Chris Hughes (Mayor of Colwyn Bay) recently visited one of our Alternative Education IT classes held at Upper Colwyn Bay Community Centre. He presented us with an engraved slate plaque to send to our pen pals in Ohio which we've made contact with during the 'Using the Web and Email' course.

One of the students, Helena Ward, took the opportunity to interview him - here's a summary.

Chris Hughes is the youngest mayor Colwyn Bay has ever had (he's 42 years old). He has been mayor since May 2003. He says "being the mayor is fun, especially meeting young people".

Chris wanted to become mayor from when he was in school. When he left school and started working he didn't like the way things were run. Someone he worked with said "if you don't like the way things are run, then why don't you do something about it?' He took the advice and became a union rep.

He also became mayor because of his 14 year old son, who said that there was nothing for young people to do. Chris spoke to someone at work and they said 'Why are you bothered about children - they can't vote". He thought that was out of order, and he was determined to do something about it. Chris also wanted things to change because he's lived in Colwyn Bay all his life.

Chris has met Tony Blair twice. "He was a real nice guy" he said.

His most pleasing achievement was the making of the skate park 'Dan's Den' in Eirias Park.

Married with one son and a dog that "is a bit nutty", One thing he would like to change in Colwyn Bay would be crime and anti-social behaviour.

He is the mayor until 21 June and would love to stay for another year.
