Weird tales

Basil Fawlty hiding on the stairs

Last updated: 24 September 2009

It seems that strange things have been happening in Colwyn Bay. Read these stories and tell us what you think - or add your own tales.

Stephen's story
Many things have happened in my house. But this was the scariest. I was in on my own because my sister and my parents went out shopping, when I heard a great big thud in the room above me. I went upstairs to the room and nothing was there. There were no windows open and there was nothing on the floor that looked as though it had been dropped. We do have a dog but my dog was sitting in my arms at the time.

I went downstairs and carried on watching TV. I then heard something coming down the steps. I shot up and opened the door to the hallway. There was nothing there. This time I got really scared so I left all of the doors open and made sure that the lights were on so if it happened again I could see the thing. The thuds and other sounds continued.

Eventually my parents came home. I told them what had happened, but they thought I was hearing things. We then heard a thud on the stairs and in the room above. My dad shot up and ran up the stairs. There was nothing. Everybody who was in the house at the time were all in the same room. We usually hear other things such as cupboard doors opening and shutting, but we are not scared of that.

The house we live in is an old family house and is around 100 years old. My great uncle always used to eat tripe and onions on a Friday at 6pm up in his room. It doesn't happen all the time, but on a Friday at 6.00 we can smell the tripe and onions in that same room. Our next door neighbours say that they absolutely hate tripe and onions.

Amy's story
Often this month I've been upstairs in my room alone and I would hear the tap running in the bathroom, or the door would be closed one minute and the next it would be open. There's even times when the light just turns on and off!

But something that really scared me was that one day I was just lying on my bed and I felt as if someone was tickling my leg with their hand.

It just goes on and on - I was in the bath and I heard a knock on the door. I got up and answered it but no-one was to be seen, my family were all downstairs.

This is all very weird and I wish I knew what is going on!

UK-Paranormal, Prestatyn
UK-Paranormal Investigation Team have found the Imperial Hotel in Colwyn Bay to be an extremely interesting place regarding paranormal activity. They have been researching the hotel for a year after a number of previous owners, staff and visitors reported major paranormal activity in the upper floors. UK-Paranormal are now hosting overnight Ghost Vigils. Research is ongoing and the team will soon be releasing their findings. If anyone should wish to experience the ghostly goings on for themselves please contact us via our website.

I used to work in colwyn bay in the late 70's and i was attacked on the top floor of the builing by what I can only describe as a spirit of some sort. I was forced up against the window and I believe they were trying to throw me out the window. Bars were later installed but I left and never returned. I still feel that I am being haunted to this day.

Our house is about 85 years old. Over recent months everyone who lives in our house (7 of us) have heard footsteps upstairs, odd bumps and even seen lights. Last week I shouted up to the kids to stop running around and get in bed and go to sleep. I went upstairs to find them both fast asleep. But stranger still was yesterday. I was in the house on my own when I heard a buzzing noise start upstairs. I went up to find my daughter's battery toothbrush switched on. I turned it off, then I heard the voice of a girl. I was convinced that my 7 year old daughter was somehow in the house. But no, I was all alone. How can you explain that?

Digital cameras tend to have wider aspect than the human eye, the "orbs" often captured are really only dust particals floating in the air, you dont see them with the naked eye but add a flash gun and a wider lens and they appear.

Whilst I am a Christian, and believe that there is more to this world than the physical, I regret to inform the contributers to this page that most 'experiences' are false. They tend to be caused by over excitement of certain areas of the mind, that result in sights/feelings that bear no relation to reality. However, for the person experiencing these mental malfunctions, they are impossible to distingquish from real events. So tread with caution around the subjects of ghosts, angels and spiritual awakening. All is not as it seems!

I was asleep in my bed with my boyfriend and I remeber opening my eyes and not being able to focus properly - I could see something over me. I started to scream "there is something over the bed" over and over I even scared my boyf he is 32 and was shaken up by the violent way I had reacted. I slowly drifted off to sleep. The next morning My partner said he had been that scared he could not look up because he knew there was something above us both. I can't stop thinking about this experiance I had and If it wasd a ghost who would come and see me im 24 and it has never happened before why now?

Not that old one about the 'Orbs' seen in digital photos! It's dust caught in the flash at close range and out of focus and not your Auntie Maud! Short focal length and greater depth of field causes the effect. Plenty of websites around explaining this phenomenon. Unless (ooer) only compact digital cameras are spirit detectors? Try using a digital SLR, I guarantee you won't see the spooks ever again. At the venerable age of 46 I've never ever experienced anything I would ever put down to the supernatural. For a lot of people it's easier to plump for the simplistic answer of 'ghosts' than to face the possibilty it's just something natural or downright mundane(or more than likely, imagined) like pipes or expanding woodwork. Some people believe what they want to believe no matter what.

although, quite open to the possibility of another realm existing alongside ours, i believe that if you think you are open spiritually, as K claims to be, then you are more likely to believe that this was a real experience rather than a dream or hallucination which K's experience is almost certainly is. It seems too random and nonsensical to be of any real significance. there is a saying used by sceptics, which though hackneyed, is worthwhile remembering. ' Dont be so open minded that you're brain falls out!' alternatively, being stubbornly closedminded can also be dangerous. neither state is desirable

Just to let you know, knocks at doors are a warning of something, my house is haunted too, I've actually seen a ghost in my house, she was dressed in a green victorian dress. There is nothing more awakening than actually seeing a ghost, it's such a sense of terror, wonder and amazement all at once; anyway, I've also had knocks at my doors and I've smelt a perfume passing me, I've also had something jump on my bed (and no, it wasn't a cat!) it always makes me feel really calm and happy, I don't know why. You have to see to believe, well I have seen and I do beleive. Oh, and I'm sorry to say, but Most Haunted is about 99% rubbish, I've probably seen more ghosts than Derek Achorah!

To K. Colwyn Bay... So the next coming of Christ is to be in St George's Road in Rhos on Sea? I have read some drivel in my time but that one takes the biscuit! Over-indulgence in anything spiritual (Gin, Vodka, Whisky...) is certainly a terrible thing. Take more water with it in future!

Oct 05 I had an experience involving a spirit child and UFO with a message. I couldn't sleep very well when I saw a spirit child no more than 22 months. I tried to talk to her but she faded away. I could still sense her in the room although I couldn't see her. I was made to look out of the bedroom window where I saw a normal plane pass by. It stopped and then travelled backwards. I felt it was odd and was now transfixed. The plane morphed into a cigar-shaped light and dropped so many feet, then it would rise and zigzag all over the place at ridiculous speeds. It certainly had my attention! The craft then morphed again into a sphere and circled the sky. It then had a green light covering half the craft and a red light covering the other half in a vertical pattern. The object looked out of focus as if looking via a telescope at an out of focus object. I really can't explain this next bit, but I was made to feel the next coming of Christ is going to be upon us this year (2006) in the form of light. Why I was picked I do not know. I am a very spiritual person and understand the spirit world. I want to reamin anomymous as I am not in it for an ego trip. I am merely sharing my experience. Interestingly, after reading the Pope's xmas speech, I can't help feeling he has been gifted with this knowledge also, reading between the lines. Strange angelic lights have been witnessed by many people above St Georges Road in Rhos-on-Sea eg. 3ft feather shaped lights in the sky, a sign of the angels. I can't explain it, but something is happening of a spiritual nature. I am starting forums for research purposes to collect information on other people who have had angelic or spiritual sightings/messages and I would love you to reply if you can add experiences of your own.

Georgina Bradbury from Llysfaen
These stories certainly sound interesting, but they are nothing compared to this one. I live in the Castle Inn in Llysfaen and there have been many strange things happen there, lights go on and off, the music has come on when it has been turned off at the plug, the glasswasher comes on and off, there's a load of weird stuff that's happened. There have also been sightings of ghosts in the snug(the oldest part of the pub)by quite a few different people and not just after a few beers either!

Ghosts (all that other paranormal stuff too), alternsative/complementary therapy/ religion & UFO/abductions are all socially constructed. They do not exist in objective reality.

Stephen (the guy from the bumps in the room)
We dont have any pipes above the room that I was talking about, and when we moved in we had the house sorted out as it hadn't been touched, the old Victorian bells that were used by the students were still intact and usable, They were also useable (with force!) These things still continue and have also happened when the neighbours are out so it's not them either - very strange!

Sian Llanelian
Sorry, but the bumps Stephen talked about could just be bad piping it happened often in my house! Get your pipes checked mate! It's always easy to make youself belive there are ghosts, but Amy's story is spooky, I believe in ghosts, but there are always logical explanations to some "hauntings".

Jane Jones from Chester
I think this is true but I don't think it is as bad as they are making out. I do believe in ghosts though.

Sarah Hutchinson from Rhos on Sea
These experiences certainly sound potentially interesting! As a Paranormal Investigator, I do try to rule out all other possibilities before jumping to any conclusion that the phenomena is being caused by anything 'paranormal'. However, going off just what was written above, these certainly sound interesting. I'm currently in the process of sorting out the group's 2005 calendar so if anyone reading this thinks that their house may be haunted, please do get in touch. Each case is treated in the strictest confidence. Regards, Sarah (Founder of "North Wales Paranormal Research")

Have you tried taking a photograph of the area concerned with either a digital camera or ordinary camera to see if anything appears on film? Many people have photographed strange mists and 'orbs' in haunted locations. Perhaps this is worth checking out.
