Puyi and Bron decided to have a diet change last week. The red pandas and the Asian short-claw otters share the same enclosure. The red pandas are fed on a diet of various fruits, vegetables and dry food high up on a platform. The otters are fed mainly fish and other meats on the ground in a covered box with an entrance at the bottom. This box was designed to cover the food to avoid things like sea-gulls and magpies nicking the food. Not red panda proof.
Last week an otter was observed hanging off the tail of one of the pandas! It would appear that Bron and Puyi took a fancy to fish that day and tried to steal the otters' dinner. Obviously the otters did not take kindly to this and tried to stop them. Quite a sight I must say, although shocking also extremely comical. Obviously the red pandas were immediately checked after the ordeal for any wounds, but neither had sustained an injury.
The otters have now become unsurprisingly very protective of their dinner, standing on guard and taking it in shifts to be on red panda watch! The red pandas seem to have given up trying to steal their food, either fish was not as nice as they expected or having an otter hanging off your tail is enough to put them off.
On the day it happened the Red Pandas had plenty of their own food so it was unlikely they were hungry, more just curious!
Apart from this event things have been very quiet in the Asian enclosure. The warm weather has tempted the red pandas out of their beds more during the day. The zoo was packed over the Easter period so it was nice for so many people to see these illusive creatures. They have always been a huge hit at the zoo due to their adorable teddy bear like faces
