Thanks for the history of the donkey path. During the 1950s and 60s we used to spend a week (Whit week) with my parents' friends in Kensington Ave, Old Colwyn, hence the use of the donkey path. I have many photos of the path, you are right, there's not much left of it now. On another point, we used to use the small boating lake in Eirias Park, those were the days, does anyone have any pictures?

Re: The Donkey Path. Off the top of my head. Before it was built, there was just a path across the railway and, sadly, one day an elderly man was hit by a train and killed. The locals resolved to build a safer path with a tunnel under the railway and the landlord of the Marine pub donated a donkey which was raffled to pay for the construction of the path, hence the name. The original path lasted until the early 1980s, when the lower section was obliterated to make way for the building of the A55. The present day path is not nearly as charming as the original!

As a child in the late 50s early 60s, our family holidays were always in Colwyn Bay, Dad took us each morning fo a stroll thru the Dingle, at the end of which there was a model steam train that ran along the prom. It was named Prince Charles, we'd always watch the engineer 'getting up steam' for the day ahead. What became of this wonderful model engine?

Rydal Penrhos are putting on an Archive Exhibition on 23rd May and would like copies of pupil photos and messages from ex pupils of Penrhos College and Rydal School, Colwyn Bay. The older the better and anything of interest about either of the schools at that time.

I attended Argyle House from 1949 onwards. I was in the same class as Jane Wilkinson who lived at the Marlborough Hotel. I think she left the Bay not long after she finished at Argyle House.

For all you Old Girls of Penrhos College, I was there from 89-95, and was so upset when they pulled it down. If you want to get in touch with people and see some pics, lots of us Penrhos girls are on Facebook.

Sandra Shaw and Ann Thomas, I also went to Argyle House School from about 1960-64 and I remember Miss Jones and Miss Hardman, who used to cook and serve our dinner every day. I also remember taking my first trip abroad when I was six, my mum and my gran came, too, and we went to Ostende, Lourdes, and San Sebastian. I also vaguely remember a nightclub somewhere, but it might have been a different trip from the one you went on, I think it was in 1961 or 62.

We have just move into the area from Sheffield are renting at the moment and are looking to buy but have become extremely confused as to which area we should settle in. PLEASE HELP! We have been given strong advise against buying in the centre of Colwyn Bay and told either 'West End' or 'Colwyn Heights' is best. People in Llandudno say don't buy in Colwyn at all! I must say I am now very confused. The housing stock is excellent here but where is best what should I really avoid and why?

Sally: I do remember a wooden hut on top of Bryn-Eirin (spelling could be wrong)during the war which was said to contain radio equipment and was off bounds.

Meg should join the Old Penrhosian Society. To do that get in touch with Rydal/Penrhos. I was at the College from 1960-1970 and have been a member since I left.

Does anyone have information about the history of the Royal Hotel and Restaurant? It features in various incarnations, on old postcards of Colwyn Bay.

I was the only American girl at Penrhos College in 1983-1984. one of the best years of my life. Lots of singing in the choir, studying and late night fun..and I still miss the Irish Sea. Hoping to reconnect with any of the girls from my time there. Does anyone know how to connect with the school itself so I can find my "old" friends? Hope to be back in North Wales this summer.

Sandra Shaw Towyn, I also went to Argyle House School in Colwyn Bay in 1954/55. Miss Jones also had a corgi dog and at breaktime we had to take it down the dingle for a walk. Miss Jones also took us on a school trip to Ostend in Belgium and she took us all to Dunkirk Beach and we went to the war graves cemetry. I think I was about 10 then but I remember Miss Jones used to speak several languages and although we did not appreciate it then I now think she was very clever to organise these trips all on her own long before the package holidays.

I went to Penrhos 1946-1954 I started in the September after the school came back from Chatsworth where it had been evacuated to during the war. There is an interesting book on the time at Chatsworth by Nancie Perk called "School days at Chatsworth". I have several photos of my time there, the most interesting is of 4 of us on the prom going to play hockey on the beech, which we did when the pitches were too wet and the tide was out. I was shocked when visiting the site of the senior school last year, to find the only bits I recognised were the public footpath through the middle and the Dingle.

With reference to the recent queries about Penrhos College; This was taken over by the Ministry of Food during the war. Together with my friend I went to dances which were held in the Gymnasium/cum Hall on Wednesday nights in the Winter, the music provided by a gramophone and speakers. The dances were later moved to the Queens Hotel Old Colwyn, another acting M/O/F.office block but with a superb Ballroom. If you can obtain the book about Old Colwyn by Dilys Thomas you will find much information re Penrhos.

At the age of 3 I attended Argyle House School in Greenfield Road,Colwyn Bay. This was a private School run by Miss Jones. She had a friend called Miss Hardman who was a hairdresser.I think my parents paid about 4 guineas a term for me to go there. I remember when we had prayers Miss Jones's 2 cats used to come on the desks.Does anyone else remember this school?
