How sad that this 'chat' should sink into a slanging match between Bangor and Caernarfon. As a newcomer I find neither town attractive. This part of the North Wales coast is beautiful and historic and should be cashing in on its potential to attract tourists but new developments (I live in Doc Fictoria) and improvements are constantly slated. Please Caernarfon, rediscover your pride. Open your doors and your hearts to the world and make your town a great place to live in and well worth visiting.

Anon - You have obviously not visited Bangor for a while because it IS dead! I am not criticising Caernarfon - just Gwynedd Council. So Bangor has the amenities that C'fon has for kids? Where's the skate park? Where's the cinema/theatre/arts centre? Where's the library? You seem to think that I am criticising Caernarfon - we in Bangor would love to have all the money C'fon gets spent on the town, but may I suggest that if C'fon is so bad for you that you consider moving to somewhere with plenty of shops on their high street.

Annoyed, You didn't say it like that though did you? Besides hasn't Caernarfon got a lot of shops closed as well? Now that Woolworths has closed Caernarfon is dead. Is Bangor? No. So don't criticise Caernarfon.

To Anon - my comments were about amenities for children, things to do etc , skate parks and cinemas, not shops. And for your information there are approximately 50 empty shop units in Bangor at the moment. I would count your blessings Anon, that you happen to live where the Council have their HQ!

Caernarfon gets everything you say? Ha! Who's just got that big building, including Debenhams, Bodyshop, River Island and Poundland? Bangor!

Annoyed from Bangor
All I can hear is moan moan moan! Caernarfon gets EVERYTHING... Bangor gets nothing ! From Xmas lights to Skate parks the Cofis get it all, and now fountains too !!! Gwynedd Council should be just that ... not a council for CAERNARFON only but a council for the whole of Gwynedd !!! So stop moaning about the state of C'fon - at least your hoodies have a skate park and a cinema !!!

Where are the councillors getting these ideas from? It's time we had new councillors. Every time I go to town people have a new comment. Today people are talking about the moving of Ysgol Syr Huw Owen. Why? This town is a mess. The new court - why? We have one already. I will not vote to keep these councillors in again, it's time to have young and experienced people to have a change. People of Caernarfon are disgusted about what they are doing to our once beautiful town.

I am a child in Caernarfon and agree that there are yobs around the bus stops. But why should you take a couple of childish yobs and destroy the meaning of Caernarfon? And how nice it is to walk through the quiet streets behind the castle? Don't you remember that the castle in Caernarfon was used to crown Prince Charles? It shows that Caernarfon is special! And not all of us are yobs. And to Terry and everyone who agrees with him, that one Welsh person was a bit rude, do you mean to explain that all English men are well mannered?

Resident of Caernarfon
I live right in the centre of Caernarfon and have done for about 6 years. The place has rapidly declined since I moved there, I don't feel safe living in the centre of town any more. As far as I'm concerned though, there is nothing wrong with Welsh people, they will treat you how you treat them. I have made some good friends who are Cofis, who will translate for me if need be!

tourist info man
Tom, Gosport - Leave Caernarfon alone! The reason you didnt get a warm reception at the tourist information area, was probebly due to you being rude. We are polite with all customers and are top of the mystery shopper reports in wales.

As a born and bread sgub man im enclined to agree with some comments regarding the town been run down. i wish i was rich, then i would develop the old morris and jones wharehouse buildings opposite the railway line as they are just decaying empty buildings.new riverside club and resturant with accomadation maybee, and a prospect for more employment for caernarvon people.better than the ugly bloke o flats at the dock, geezzz.

On the 18 August 1978 the first soil was excavated to clear the site for Cybin Industrial Eastate Caernarfon. The company was M.B.Z. I had a good time going to the Black Boy, Ship and Castle and talking to Barry the landlord. The town was rocking at that moment in time. The flyover was being built over Llanberis Road, there was plenty of work. I hope most of the men I worked with at Cybin are still getting around.

I understand that there are various problems in Caernarfon at the moment, what with so much redevelopment going on and constant changes to road access, etc. I do, however, urge local people, as well as visitors to our great town, to try and be patient and look forward to the completion of this development work at the end of 2008. We have to be positive that current changes will be an improvement and the plans underway for events in the town for 2009 are very exciting and something to look forward to. The vision is there and there are many people currently working to ensure it becomes a reality.

A few weeks ago my wife and I had our 7th trip to Wales in 3 years. We love the people, the country and especially the mountains, where we spend a lot of time walking. On this occasion we (also my mother) had our 2nd visit to Caernarfon, but only because it happened to be the stop at one end of the “Welsh Highland Railway” line. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that this one of most unpleasant places in Wales I've visit and I don’t plan to return again. It’s dingy, dowdy, run down and generally has an air of "threat" provided by gangs of youths hanging about street corners (in the main street) and behaving in a menacing manner. On our first visit we were approached by a rather persistent drunk, who seemed to think that inviting total strangers back to his house for a drink was a friendly, rather than an intimidating, gesture. Facilities e.g. decent cafes/restaurants, for tourists are poor and reception at the tourist office is, to say the least, cool.

To be fair I support Alison’s main point, even though for me it kind of states the obvious. The fact, judging by the comments on this site, is that there are other visitors who feel sorely disappointed by their experience of Caernarfon. Isn't it time local councillors got their “finger out” and isn't it time those who elect them insisted on them doing their job, before it's too late.

Where did our castle go? Travelling up on the Menai Strait from Portdinorwic the first thing you would see from Waterloo Port was our castle. Now all you can see are two flag poles on the Eagle Tower. The dock monster has filled the sky. What a pity.
