I Love Blaenau

Blaenau from Gloddfa Ganol by Iola Ellis This is your chance to bury Blaenau's reputation of being a wet, grey town where nothing happens. Go on. Get stuck in! Tell us about your favourite pub, shop, entertainment or activity.

I was born in Cwm Penmachno in 1927 and moved to Blaenau in 1935. Went to the county school. I can remember the winters and some times good summers. Moved to Coventry in 1940 with my parents in time for the November Blitz. Blaenau now looks very run down. Could do with some cash injection.

My mother was from Blaenau Ffestiniog and I lived there until I was seven. We moved to Llandudno but I spent most of my school holidays with my Nain & Taid who lived in Manod. I have many happy memories of those days and hope one day to make a return visit. I still have a lot of relatives there.

There is a good musical heritage in Blaenau. Many artists from folk, rock and even hip hop.

We're writing from Catalonia. Is it true you are the wettest town in Britain, as our secondary school book states?

I see from the BBC news pages that the good citizens of Blaenau Ffestiniog want to attract more tourists to the town. Well a good start would be to have some cafes or pubs open in the middle of the afternoon. Last year I spent a week's holiday in Porthmadog and on the day we went to Blaenau Ffestiniog it rained all day. After returning to the town centre we could not find a cafe or pub open anywhere to shelter from the rain. Even the tourist office could not suggest anywhere. There was one chip shop cum cafe that may have been open but the sole member of staff was more interested in her phone conversation than in serving three potential customers! So if you want more people to spend money in your town you should start by having places open for them to spend money.
