Children's view

Beddgelert primary school pupils

Last updated: 15 June 2007

Pupils from Ysgol Beddgelert tell us what they think of life in their village and how it got its name.
Watch village children tell the story of Gelert.

What's great about Beddgelert?
Daniel
: It's a quiet place and there are lots of places to play, like the park or the ruined old stone house which we use as our den.

Heulwen: There's a tourist information centre which is really helpful - they'll help you if you're lost and tell you things like how to get to Porthmadog, where the nearest post office is and where you can go for a walk.

Laura: The ice cream parlour! It brings lots of people into Beddgelert. My favourite flavour is lemon sorbet. You can get weird ones like coffee and bubblegum too - it's a funny shade of pink.

Ceri: It's good because not a lot of people come here, so it isn't busy like it is in town. There aren't cars making a noise every morning - it's a nice, quiet place to live.

Sam: There isn't a lot of fighting here either. It's a safe place to live.

Megan: There's also this bush by the side of the road which people go into and sing! Daniel and Siôn do it sometimes - they hide in the bush, sing and people walking by give them money!

Is there anything not so good about Beddgelert?
Ceri
: When tractors go through the village they often leave muck and sheep poo on the road, which stinks for ages.

Laura: I don't like the steam train. I live in Rhyd Ddu and it's really annoying when it goes 'choo choo', really loudly in the morning and wakes you up.

Daniel: Some visitors who come here go round making lots of noise and they swear at the people who live here. I don't know why. They also drop litter.

Anest: The visitors smoke in the park, which isn't very nice if we want to play there.

What about going for a walk?
Ceri
: You can walk up Snowdon, or follow a path which goes out of Beddgelert over the bridge, round and back in to the village over the wooden bridge.

Why's Beddgelert called 'Gelert's Grave'?
Daniel
: There was once a prince called Llewelyn, who had a hunting dog called Gelert. Gelert was his favourite dog and one day he left him at home to look after his baby son when he went hunting.

When Llewelyn came back, he saw the baby's crib was upside down and there was blood everywhere. He thought Gelert had killed the baby, so he killed Gelert.

Then he picked up the crib and saw the baby underneath - he was fine - and there was a big wolf, dead on the floor. Gelert had saved his son.

Llewelyn was really sad after that and built a grave for Gelert.

There are some ruins near the grave which we think are Llewelyn's house.

Anest: My dad and his friend built the little house which has got a statue of Gelert inside it. Children can go and sit on him.

Laura: Gelert's story must be true because how else did Beddgelert get its name?
