Maggie Williams introduces the town's championship section band which plays a big part in community life in Beaumaris.
Beaumaris Band is one of the jewels in Anglesey's crown and enjoys unqualified support from the 2,000 townspeople. Few towns of this size in the UK have even one band - Beaumaris has three thriving bands and two classes of beginners.
Altogether, 140 active musicians, led by director of music, Gwyn M Evans, and with the dedicated support of Mr Fred Evans (chairman), Paul Hughes (deputy conductor and musical director of the 'B' Band) and many other people, they go from strength to strength. They have close contacts with primary and secondary schools and are part of a band/school/home ethos that promotes music throughout Anglesey.
The story of the senior band is fairly well known, after decades of struggle to keep going, and with a band room full of instruments and nobody to play them, a decision was made in the mid 80s to recruit young players from surrounding primary schools and the band has never looked back since.
The 1990s was a fairy tale story for the band, having been successively promoted through the sections gaining championship section status in 1997. On the way it has won first place in most grades and has represented Wales in UK championships on many occasions.
The youth band (all under 18) has also won many prestigious events as well as the 'B' Band which were recently promoted from the fourth section to the third section.
The band enjoys travelling abroad and has visited the Netherlands, Ireland and most recently Norway.
The senior band present four major shows every year in the town of Beaumaris, as well as numerous concerts throughout the UK and are well known for their lively style and humour, diversity of music, and sheer passion for quality.
