The picture above was submitted by J A Owen from Beaumaris who said it was: "Found in an overgrown patch just off the beach at Llanddona, does anyone know who he was?"
The Welsh wording translates: William Ellis Williams, 1881-1962, mathematician and engineer, experimented and flew an aeroplane on this beach in September 1911.

There are hangars outside Beaumaris. What were they used for? they are near a small bay going to Llangoed.

What is the building at the far end of Beaumaris beyond the castle? It looks like facilities for an outdoor swimming pool which is being systematically destoyed by vandals which is a shame. What if any, are the plans for this building?

We are a medieval living history group who are putting on an event in the castle at Beaumaris at the end of May. We are trying to find somewhere to store our traliers/cars for the weekend - without it costing us a fortune. Can anyone help?

The mansion is privately owned, and to visit it is trespassing, although judging by the well-worn footpath it doesn't seem to bother most people, and there have been no attempts made to keep people out over the years, as you can see by the vandalism all around the building. Most of the building is now too unstable to enter safely, although some rooms remain remarkably intact, with fireplaces and ornate plaster designs still visible in a lot of places. Access to the upper floors is totally out of the question however, with few staircases remaining and almost all floors caved in. The building is due to be converted into modern flats in the near future, and the clearing efforts seen around the building are part of this.

I'm backpacking through wales and I'd love to have a look around the derelict beaumaris mansion, does any body know who the current owners are so that I can seek permission?

Have come across my Old BGS Badge, which is silver (hall marked) and in a shape of a shield on it has ALBAM EXORNA 1603, and the School Coat of Arms on it. Is there someone out there that can give me some info on this Badge ie is there many about as surely it could be a limited edition and is it of any valve.

To Keri Humphreyes, 30 Rating Row is a small two-bedroom terraced house in the centre of the town, not far from the hotels.

My great-grandfather John Goodman Humphreys lived at 30 Rating Row, Beaumaris(1918-26). Occupation noted as a hotelier. Is this address a hotel or pub?

John, In response to your question of ownership of Baron Hill I believe that Watkins Jones are acquiring the site with plans to put a number of properties on it (apparently they do not as yet own the site, but I believe they are trying to secure the site and then claim the area) I may have been misled on this matter, but that's how it was reported to me.

As someone who was born in Bangor in 1946 and lived in Penmon with my grandparents William & Gracie Roper, I am a little conversant with some of the people and the locations around the Penmon/Beaumaris area. My mother, Olwen (Roper) Crump is still alive and would be able to answer some questions about the history. I am interested in the message from Williams, Sao Paulo, Brazil. My father, Clifford Crump, and his brother, George, were also evacuees with the Bluecoat School in Beaumaris during the war. Do you have any recollection of them?

Have managed to discover my great-great grandfather Wallace Siggs living at an address described as "Garden House" on the 1861 census with his father John (a gamekeeper), mother Mary and siblings. The younger ones had their birthplace described as "Baron Hill, Anglesey", which I always thought was an area, but obviously not! (Unfortunately the owners of the house were not at home on census night.)

During the second world war I was a boarding school student at the Liverpool Blue Coat School in Beaumaris. The boarding was at a house called Red Hill and later at Woodgarth. The school was in the town centre. What has happened at these locations during these last 65 years?

My uncle Pat(Patrick Parle Murphy)lived with his wife Phyllis (nurse Murphy nee Jones) in Ty Ceiliog on Red Hill. The house I think was part of the Bulkley Estate and "went" with the job as district nurse/midwife. Many happy holidays spent there! My uncle Pat was twice Mayor of Beaumaris,I believe the first Irish Catholic one.He taught maths/navigation on the Conwy.

A friend told me that work has recently begun to clear Baron Hill of its accumulated debris & undergrowth. As I understand it, both the stable courtyard and the service wing of the main house have been cleared so far. Anyone know what plans there are for Baron Hill?

The walk down the drive to Baron Hill is great. The trees lining the drive look like they have had branches grafted on to make them symmetrical. The gardens are overgrown and the building itself is just a derelict shell, but you always get a sense of what a magnificent place it must once have been. Not sure if access is allowed anymore. Does anyone know if there is a public footpath or is it trespassing?

We are very interested in the house - we went up there late last night with camcorder and slr camera and loads of torches, it's very very dark and you need to wear wellies or good hard boots, and be very careful - lots of old rotted beams and floors. I have about 225 pics of the place and some film footage but that's not clear at all, the pictures came out really good and got lots of orbs, really clear ones as well, the follies are quite eerie places. It took us quite a long time to find the fountain in front of the house - it's buried away in trees and bushes, there is only the base of the fountain left. Shame really, I bet that looked good in its day.

I read in "A History of the Isle of Man" written by William Blundell in 1656, that Sir Richard Buckley of Anglesey "fruitlessly endeavoured the discovery" of O'Brazille (or Hy-Brasil), the phantom island off the west coast of Ireland, "by twice manning out a ship of his own from Beaumaris."I am writing a book on Hy-Brasil and finding out more about Sir Buckley's attempts would be extremely important for my research. Could anyone tell me where I might find further information about his endeavours? Any pointers would be gratefully received.

I believe that baron Hill was abandoned by the Williams Bulkeley family because the double death duties that were incurred in the 1st World War by the deaths of his father and older brother meant that Sir Richard could not afford the upkeep. In the second world war it was used by the Royal Engineers who were stationed there, and they used the instruments belonging to the Beaumaris Town Band. When Baron Hill caught fire, all the instruments were thrown from upper story windows and badly damaged. My father helped to arrange the gradual repair and replacement of the instruments, and was the bandmaster from 1! 950 to the mid sixties.
