Barmouth town centre

Last updated: 27 April 2006

Recent improvements to the town have prompted hopes for a bright future, but the Lonely Planet Guide to Wales describes Barmouth as tacky. What do you think?

John Pugh in North Carolina wrote: "Biased as I am, being from Barmouth, I have to say there is no other river in north Wales that draws breath like the River Mawddach viewed from Panorama walk. Frankly, having viewed the Grand Canyon, I prefer the Mawddach and will always keep its picture in my mind."

Wonder if they say that about Florida too these days? Thumbs up for Barmouth, just a bit of quality investment needed for a pretty little place.

We have just come backfrom our 1st short break in Barmouth & we loved it! Yes there is tat but you get that everywhere & that makes the Britsh seaside but you need a good mix to keep people coming. We stayed just behind the Tal-Y-Don & once I got over the shock of driving up the smallest road I had ever been on it was great & YES we will be back

Barmouth is in an area of outstanding natural beauty, as for the tacky question, it just needs some more investment from both the council and new business, however it's a very seasonal resort which counts on tourism, so it needs to attract many more visitors through the spring, summer and the winter, to encourage people to invest in the area.

I love Barmouth and the surrounding area, so many happy times spent there as a child, cycling up and down the prom, walking up to the peak, walking aon the beach and exploring old Barmouth, I too hope to move back there one day. My family have lived in the area for over 100 years, so Barmouth is definately in my blood. Its beautiful and anyone who says otherwise is blind!!!

My family has been coming to Barmouth for approximately 70+ years, so I guess you can say we have the 'Barmouth Bug'.As a child, days would be spent on the beach and nights would be on the fair, "Charlie's" arcades then sit outside The Tal-Y-Don or The Last Inn (whilst Dad had a well earned pint!) and of course finished off with a bag of fish & chips.

As a teenager, I caught my one and only salmon on The Mawddach. I brought an ex - girlfriend here and she fell in love with the place. My partner is a Bulgarian Lady, who like me just loves the place, she definitely has the 'bug'. I run a busy airport transfer and private hire business but haven't been abroad in years because I love nothing more than to put a few things in the car and enjoy the fantastic drive / journey to my little bit of paradise.

When people ask me what's so special about Barmouth, I just tell them that I have never known a place like it where I can goand totally relax and lose myself. It just has a magic that you can't explain. Breathtaking scenery, fantastic people, great food, a great pint, I could go on and on, Barmouth is in my heart. I recently lost my 80 year old father so my next visit will be a sad one. Barmouth beware, I hope to live there one! day.

English Local who just moved to beautiful Barmouth
Barmouth needs to move the car parks and get some better shops and a permanent market. Good shops and a good market would draw in a lot more trade, which is what Barmouth is lacking. It relies solely on tourism and is dead in winter. It's not good for the locals who have to leave work during these harsh months. No tourists, no business, no work, no trade... winter is dead and the council need to wake up and bring in some measures to get Barmouth to the year-round resort haven that it has the potential of becoming.Barmouth is a beautiful, special place with lovely people living there, just needs some high street shops and a permanent base for a market to be on every day. Barmouth needs to attract locals from other towns around it as well as tourists.

Barmouth needs cash spending on it. It could be a fantastic place. I want to nominate the whole town for a 60 minute makeover. It has the potential to be a superb resort. The beaches are fantastic, the views second to none. The council needs a rocket up it, it has let the area down badly. Tt's sitting on a gold mine.

Have been going there for decades, always staying near Dolgellau which is charming. Barmouth is the place for a few memories to be been made, love it, it's a 'stuck in time' sort of place that has unmistakeable beautiful views, friendly people and now my 22-month-old daughter loves it too.

I visited Barmouth several times a year with my family as we had a caravan about 30 miles from Barmouth itself. It was great year upon year we enjoyed ourselves. When I got married I had my honeymoon there and now I have my own kids we still frequent Barmouth, and shall do probably for years to come as we too have bought a caravan again about 30 miles away. Yes Barmouth has changed over the years but havent most places, its a lot quieter than perhaps it used to be but I still recommend it to friends and place for them to enjoy themselves.

Visiting for second time this year soon. A beautiful place which might do well to remind people what a wonderful base it is for walking - instead of tacky foods (that said, the Knickerbocker Glories are the best). Trains are also great, once you get used to the smell of booze!

We love Barmouth, we had our honeymoon there, and have made it our yearly trip with the kids. The eldest is now 30 and we stil go. We are now taking the grandkids too, a lovely place to chill, wicked cockle shop, chippy to die for and lovely views, lovely people, lots of history.

I LOVE BARMOUTH and Dolgellau and all around this beautiful region. The people have always been so friendly and I just hope they keep this up because when hoteliers etc get a bit spoiled, hmmm? It's gorgeous in all seasons, all the colours change and the scenery changes and yes, the quieter the better

One can no longer stay on the main street though, as the kids are making this too noisy at night now, which is such a shame.

I love Barmouth in the winter when it returns to being a sleepy little town by the sea and all tacky bucket and spade shops are shut. Then it is the best place on earth. The best beaches and the people are so friendly.

Ive been going to Barmouth for the passed three years and luv it. We are back in september this year and can not waite. We stop in the wooden lodges at rhinog park with breathtaking views and just a short walk to lovely sandy beaches, its such a peaceful place. We've definitely got the Barmouth bug.

Yes, it may be boring to keep returning to the same old place, but as various comments have said, it gets in your blood. I now own a caravan at Caerddaniel and there is no better sight than sitting with a glass in my hand, watching the sun going down over the Lleyn peninsula, whether it is January or August.

As for "tacky Barmouth" yes there are some shops which I would prefer not to see there but they cater for the market. Having just returned from an easter week holiday, you see a lot of contrasts, easter weekend full of tourists (bread and butter to the locals%2! 9, but from about Wednesday onwards it settles down to a nice gentler pace, not dead but ticking over.

Just move away from main streets, down to the harbour, the old town, stretch your legs and get on the hills (see tourist info for details), from up there you cant see the "seaside tat" but can see what has attracted people for generations, a beautiful little seaside town in a fantastic setting.

I love Barmouth but it is spoilt by dog owners allowing their dogs to foul the pavements. On every street there is dog excrement.

Barmouth has been a family favourite for 3 generations. I am 30 years old and have been to Barmouth every year since I was 3, some of my fondest memories are in Barmouth, days on the lovely beaches, the walk over the Mawddach, then the Fairbourne railway and then the ferry, afternoons on the fairground, swimming in the sea, and even now after all these years seeing my kids when we are there doing the same things as i did brings so many reminders of the good times i have had there. Barmouth will always be Barmouth, relaxing, stunning scenery, and somewhere I will go back for many years to come.

We visit Barmouth regularly and have found an absolutely fantastic picturesque place to stay out of the hussle and bustle. It`s the Storehouse on the River at Dolgellau (Llanelltyd)It`s Old and very beautiful,we have had many a memory made there. Only 300yds from the Mawddach cycle trail its safe for our children to go out unaccompanied, we can`t wait to returnIt`s also very reasonably priced

Barmouth has become so tacky.I was born and raised there in the early 1950s when there was still community and respect there. Now we read in the Cambrian News about the rise in crime there and anti-social behaviour allegedly resulting from the actions of so and so from Barmouth. The names given in the paper are NOT Barmouth names. They are outsiders who have settled there and lowered the whole tone. What has happened to many of the old buildings is nothing short of a crime. The Caersalem Chapel is now a house of tack, and Beach Road is so tacky it makes the front at Blackpool look respectable. As for the old Pavilion Cinema, that area is ultra tacky with the ugly amusement arcade and gross dancehall. As for drugs and drug-fuelled crime, there's a disproportionate level in a small town.
