Charlie and the Dragon

Charlie Brooks

Last updated: 27 April 2006

Former EastEnders star Charlie Brooks talks about the start of her acting career in Barmouth at the Dragon Theatre, still thriving today.

How did you get into acting at the Dragon Theatre?
At the age of seven I started doing pantomimes at the Dragon and really loved it. Then when I was older and wanted to come down to London to go to drama school my parents were absolutely fantastic with all their support and encouraged me all the way.

What sort of productions did you do?
Pantomimes and amateur dramatics.

Did you enjoy your time at the Dragon Theatre?
Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed it - I had so much fun with the other children.

What are your connections with the theatre now?
I visited it when I was doing EastEnders and saw all the wonderful things that they had done to the building. It's a different theatre now from when I was there - very modern - but it still retains a great atmosphere.

Dragon Theatre

  • The Dragon Theatre was converted from a Victorian chapel in the late 1950s. It seats 186 people in a traditional auditorium with stalls, balcony and two boxes.

The community centre extension was added in the 1970s and is currently a meeting place for almost 50 local groups and organisations. A recently completed programme of refurbishment financed by the Welsh European Funding Office and Gwynedd Council's Regeneration Fund has seen £750,000 spent on renovating the building and providing new equipment.

The Dragon can be hired by community groups and for private social functions, corporate events, presentations and conferences. Staff are on hand to advise on staging events.

There's also a chance to dance on Mondays and Wednesdays between 2 and 4pm. Locals and holiday-makers are welcome to try out a bit of line-dancing on the Monday and a tea dance on the Wednesday, all year round.

During August, films will be shown in the main auditorium each Monday evening and on Wednesdays local drama groups the Barmouth Arts Society and Springfield Street Productions put on a play.

For information on purchasing tickets, please contact the theatre directly on 01341 281697.

There is wheelchair access to the auditorium, arts room and stage/backstage, a hearing loop system is installed and guide dogs/hearing dogs are welcomed.

  • Would you like to see films for free? The theatre is looking for stewards. It would mean coming to the theatre 45 minutes before the film starts and requires a small amount of safety training. If you are over 16 and interested, get in touch with Allison Williams on 01341 281697.

I grew up in Barmouth and have many happy memories of being in "Musical Showtime" for years. Bob and Beryl Billham would have endless patience teaching all of us younger kids songs like, "42nd Street" and "Thumbellina". Wonderful times!

I used to act in the Dragon theatre for years, so did my uncle Chris Bradbury. I absolutely loved it. I have many many memories of all the plays we used to do and the videos of us all acting or singing in the summer show. It was really fantastic.

I was a fourteen year old boy attending a performance at the Dragon Theatre in 1963 - they stopped the play to make an announcement from the stage that John F Kennedy had been assassinated.
