The Vicar of Bala

The Rev Nia Roberts

Last updated: 20 June 2007

A five-part TV documentary followed the life of the Rev Nia Roberts and her flock, on BBC 2W.
Programme 2.

It may seem like the traditional market town it has always been, but in Bala, there's a quiet revolution taking place. The town on the shores of Llyn Tegid has a new vicar, with her sights set on change.

Nia Roberts is young, determined and dynamic. But is Bala ready for such a rector? The Vicar of Bala is a five-part documentary which follows her story, her vision for the future and the mixed reaction of her congregation as she introduces daring new ideas and even works part-time as a barmaid to raise money for the church.

A 42-year-old divorcee, Nia Roberts came to Bala as a newly qualified rector. A down-to-earth, gregarious character, she is straightforward and speaks her mind. But her first step as the rector of Bala could prove to be her downfall.

The church is in serious debt, and always one to tackle situations head-on, Nia takes drastic measures. Her plans are to merge four of the parish churches and sell off the buildings to raise funds. Llanycil Church cottage is also to be sold, much to the dismay of many, as is Llanuwchllyn church.

And Nia has big plans for the main church in Bala, Christ Church. She wants to rip out the insides, get rid of the pews, and have one big open plan space with a coffee bar and activity spaces.

They are revolutionary changes, which are also going to cost up to £500,000. But ultimately, Nia believes that they could increase the dwindling numbers of church-goers, update the church's image and as importantly, boost the coffers.

"Closing the churches hasn't done my profile as a priest any good," she admits, but there is a steely determination behind the smiling, approachable face.

"Nia is a complete workaholic," says producer Helen Williams Elis, from the independent company, Chwarel, which made the series, "and she's determined to make a difference. During the series we see her go through emotional turmoil, doubting whether she has the strength to carry on in the face of protest and petition.

"It's a personal story, and she candidly discuses the experience of being a single woman, being a rector and trying to find some kind of work-life balance."
