Canolfan Cywain

Last updated: 27 May 2008

Llew Gwent from Bala explains the ideas behind the town's new Welsh cultural centre, Canolfan Cywain, created by community enterprise organisation Antur Penllyn.

We decided to open this centre because the Welsh language and culture are a unique attraction to this area - as well as the lake and the scenery of course.

We want to attract Welsh-speaking visitors who perhaps live somewhere more Anglicised, and want to visit somewhere where they and their children can experience a different kind of Welsh community.

We'd also like Welsh learners to come and practise and for those who've moved into the area to come along and find out more about the culture of the place they've decided to make home.

The original name for the building was Ysgubor Isaf and it was an old farm building on the Rhiwlas Estate. About 10 years ago, Robin Price from Rhiwlas gave it to Antur Penllyn as the buildings weren't in use.

We renovated the old site to create this unique building, using traditional materials like slate, stone and wood. But it's also extremely modern - the whole building is heated from the ground, so it's carbon-neutral.

We also commissioned local artists Howard Bowcott and Angharad Pearce Jones to create artwork and sculptures which look fantastic.

Before we opened in April 2008, we offered courses in the community for newcomers to learn about the area's history and how to pronounce place names.

Many took it as a stepping stone to learning Welsh, but whether they end up being fluent in Welsh or not, they will know more about our traditions and culture.

We also hope to welcome coach trips of visitors who come to towns like Llandudno for a week - if they want to experience harp music, sheep dog trials or any other Welsh traditions, we'd like to provide it.

We're going to have exhibitions and practical demonstrations of shearing and dry stone walling, as well as local produce, music and dancing.

We're also very near the grounds where the National Eisteddfod will be held in 2009, so come over and visit us if you're going. Llew Gwent
