Last updated: 08 November 2007

Abergele University of the Third Age (U3A) art club meets every Friday at Abergele Community Centre. Here this enthusiastic group of 50+ painters display some of their work and explain what inspired them to pick up a paint brush.

I'd always wanted to paint so I decided to join after my husband died. I was hopeless at school, but I'm sure I've improved by now! I love to draw portraits of people and animals and tempestuous sea scenes. My first portrait was of Tina Turner in oil - her hair was quite difficult to capture.

I also love painting flowers and this is one of some honeysuckle I brought in from my garden. I've used acrylic, which is great, because if you make mistakes you can put it right - watercolour is a little more unforgiving. Joan Evans
