Watercolour artist Elaine Jeffreys from Llanbedrog draws inspiration from her surroundings. View a selection of Elaine's work.
What is your name? Elaine Jeffreys
Where do you work? Llanbedrog (Llyn Peninsula)
How did you get started as an artist? Through the years I explored various aspects of two and three dimensional work. With my husband in the 70s and 80s I had a pottery in Wrexham producing raw-fuel fired stoneware. Examples of our work are in collections worldwide. Since retiring from teaching I have concentrated on painting in watercolour.
How would you describe your work? Traditional watercolour, fairly free, loose technique, sometimes enhanced with penwork. Subject matter includes atmospheric portrayal of sea and landscapes; also portraiture and architectural subjects. I often include figures.
Do you draw inspiration from your local area? I have been living in the north of Wales for nearly 40 years and my work is greatly influenced by the geography and resulting way of life.
Fishing, farming, slate mining and life around the coast of the Llyn peninsula provide much of the material used in the artwork. Images of children absorbed in activities on the seashore are particularly appreciated.
Where has your work been shown? I have exhibited with The Royal Society of Marine Artists, The John Laing Painting Competition, The Singer and Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, The Mall Galleries, London, Salford Art Gallery, Oriel Plas Glyn y Weddw, Llanbedrog, Oriel Theatr Clwyd, Mold, and The John Noot Gallery, Broadway.
Do you have any exhibitions coming up? St Pedrog's Church Hall,
Llanbedrog, 15-24 August 2008, 11am-5.30pm. I also have an exhibition at St Pedrog's with Liz Brickhill and Liz Taylor Webb from 25 August to 3 September.
