The lavish apartments planned for the castle never materialised because the building stopped. Despite all the security measures, the castle was never really attacked apart from some skirmishing in the Civil War. Still, it's good to see that some building is going on now - a new visitor centre is being built which will give better facilities for visitors and the helpful staff.
