New Music For Wales

Lantern Competition was so hot at the New Music Showcase held in June 2006 that the judges decided to split first prize. Evolve and Lantern will both get a recording session and a support slot with a major artist somewhere in the UK.

The four-piece band are based in the Conwy area and regularly gig in the North Wales area. The band are fully focused upon writing progressive rock music. They describe their sound as 'underground, melodic metal' and Pink Floyd are among the bands biggest influences.

Evolve St Asaph band Evolve were formed in 2003 as a four-piece combo - the addition of a bass guitarist in 2004 completed the line-up. The band released their first EP in March 2006 entitled 'City Boys' - a tribute to their roots. Evolve have many influences which include Oasis, Stone Roses, U2 and many other 90s indie bands, as well as the up-to-date Arctic Monkeys.

The four runners up were:

Denuo
Denuo is Tom Mason. He plays all of the instruments on the demos and is from Betws-yn-Rhos near Abergele. His influences include Bloc Party, Angels & Airwaves and The Foo Fighters.

The six finalists going forward to the showcase in Beaumaris on June 17 are:

Zenith
A four-piece band based in the Conwy area. They describe their sound as 'cool melodic rock - mellow rock.' Amy's influences include Kelly Clarkson, KT Tunstall and Alanis Morrisette.

Salem
A four-piece 'heavy melodic rock' band based in the Anglesey area. Their music leans towards alternative rock with theirs influences ranging from Korn, Metallica and Machine Head. They gig all over North Wales and as far away as Warrington and Birkenhead.

Gafyn Buckland
Gafyn is a solo artist and describes his sound as 'indie experimental, alternative rock'. When performing live, Gafyn is fond of using samples in his music. His influences include The Coral and the Super Furries.
