What can I say... there I was surfing the web and found my way here.
My five sisters and I lived on Anglesey for a couple of years in the 60s (Aug 1963 to Aug 1965). We lived at Rhos Newydd near Glan-yr-afon and Llangoed.
My elder sister Siân and I attended David Hughes School at Menai Bridge. We sang raucous pop songs at the top of our young voices as the green Crossville bus carried us to school (the Beatles, the Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Freddie and the Dreamers and pirate radio on Radio Caroline 199 - anyone recall that?)
I also recall a hilarious first encounter we had with the locals. My mother and I were in the China Shop in Llangoed buying groceries. My mother was in her mid thirties and stunningly attractive - she was wearing sunglasses and we had recently returned from Africa and we were the talk of the village! As she was ordering the groceries - in English, a few old biddies hanging around with nothing to do began making comments about her in Welsh; 'who does she think she is? Thinks she's a film star doesn't she? 'Oh and look at those shoes...' 'Andthat handbag...' etc. Right out of Under Milk Wood
This went on for a while until my mother couldn't stand it anymore. She stopped talking English to the lady behind the counter and turns to the old biddies and, in perfect Welsh, suggested to them that in future if they feel the need to gossip about someone right there in the same room as them it would be better if they were sure that they couldn't understand the language! You could have heard a pin drop.
This piece of news spread like wildfire - 'be careful, 'the newcomers they aren't English, they're Welsh' and just sound and act like English. It was a hoot.
After that things got better and we were warmly embraced by the loyal community and we enjoyed two incredible years there.
I also recall from our bedrooms we would look out over Red Wharf Bay and Moelfre, reflect on the wreck of the Royal Charter and imagine how awful it was for the hundreds who lost their lives so near to shore. I've seen the sea there - the storms are truly incredible, what a fierce, magical, and beautiful place Sir Fôn is.
I love returning to visit - thank you all for letting me rant!
