A Geopark for Anglesey

South Stack by Stewart Campbell

Last updated: 18 September 2006

Dr Margaret Wood and Dr Stewart Campbell from GeoMôn explain why Anglesey should be internationally recognised for its unique geology and what this could do for the island.

Latest news: Geopark status awarded.
Anglesey contains, in such a small area, a greater variety of Precambrian rocks than anywhere else in Britain. Many are of great international significance, including the copper deposits at Parys Mountain, once the largest copper mine in the world.

Also of international fame is the blue schist at the Marquis of Anglesey's Column, which brings visitors from all over the world and is the best known deposit of this rock worldwide.

Probably the best preserved ancient pillow lavas in the world are in Newborough Forest and Llanddwyn Island. They are visited by tourists and researchers from as far away as Japan, Australia, Canada and America, and photos of them are to be found in text books all over the world.

A group of Japanese scientists visit the island every year to study its 600 million year old Precambrian rocks, which provide a direct analogue with the rocks being formed today in Japan.

Gwynedd and Môn RIGS (Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites) Group has been working with a range of partners to achieve Geopark status for Anglesey, a UNESCO Global designation.

What is a Geopark?
A Geopark is a territory with a special geological heritage and a sustainable development strategy. The aim is to help local people re-evaluate their heritage and encourage geological tourism. Geopark status also helps attract European funding.

Geopark Headquarters
GeoMôn is based in the Pritchard Jones Institute in Newborough, where we have our own office, storeroom and a very large reference/work room where we house our large map collection (10,000 maps) books and rock specimens, as well as various displays and leaflets.

This room has been named Kyffin's Room after our founder patron, Sir Kyffin Williams who designed the GeoMôn logo. The room will eventually house many photographs of him, as well as his personal rock, mineral and fossil collection. His great uncle Andrew Ramsey was a director general of the Geological Survey in the 19th century and we are lucky enough to have in our possession his ceremonial clothes.

Apart from meetings and general Geopark work, we are producing educational packages for schools and interested amateurs.

I want to take my young grandsons (who are interested in geology) to Geo Mon but I'm a bit confused whether or not there will be anything for them to come and look at. I've read that you take groups on field trips. Can we just join these or do we have to be part of an organisation?
