Bowling club

Peter Kershaw

Last updated: 22 December 2008

Peter Kershaw introduces us to Abergele Bowling Club.

With a membership of more than 100, the club is thriving - but new members are always very welcome, especially young people.

Bowls is a sociable game, as you get to meet a lot of people. It's also a game of skill, which may be relaxed - or very competitive!

Not only do you have to master your opponent, you also have to master the green - Abergele offers crown green bowling, with a slight rise at the centre of the green, as opposed to flat bowling.

Membership is £32 a year, which allows members to bowl throughout the season, from April to September, from 10am till dusk.

The club has a stock of bowls for people who want to try the sport, and since there's a strong social side, the pavilion is also open to social members who don't play the game.

Young people would really enjoy the game if they gave it a try, says Peter.

The club has two qualified coaches, vetted and insured, on hand to help. In addition, there are whist matches and short mat bowling in the clubhouse during winter.

Founded in 1938, Abergele Bowling Club opened a new clubhouse in 1997. The green is owned by the county council and maintained by the club. To find it, turn off the High Street by the NatWest Bank.
