Stephen Jones (Aberdyfi) now Wolverhampton
I left Aberdyfi back in 1993 due to lack of work. My family have lived in Aberdyfi for generations, my grandfather built many of the homes (tai newyddion) up Copperhill Street where the old Cooper Cave is, which leads out to Penhelig. Myself and friends used to venture through it when we were kids. Looking back it was good fun, but dangerous. The beach parties in the summer were well know all over. It's these kind of memories that have made me decide to move back there with my wife and twins who are now four. It's a perfect place to bring them up.

M from Aberdyfi
There is nothing better than taking a little stroll round Aberdyfi with a tea in one hand and a hot water bottle under the jumper - onto that jetty and looking out toward Cardigan Bay just as the sun is setting on a beautiful winter day. A more beautiful place on earth there is not.

We have a static caravan between Aberdyfi and Tywyn and spend most our weekends and holidays there. I didn't know they were thinking about building a marina in Aberdyfi until I discovered this site. I would have to know a lot more about it before I could make a comment on its benefit to the area, but I agree with Mark that it would be tragic for the old jetty to be removed.I am also very concerned about what is happening to the pubs and eateries in the area. As someone else commented, the heart and soul of Aberdyfi appears to be disappearing because the village atmosphere that was created from the Dovey Inn and Britannia Inn (and I have recently heard that the Penhelig has also been sold to a brewery) has gone. It is a real pity, but things seem to be really changing in Aberdyfi and not for the better!

Marina in Aberdyfi? There are pro's and con's for this. Pro, I'm sure that the village would benefit from the possible revenue that would be generated by a Marina with extra boats and people in the village. The drawing that I saw for the proposed Marina showed the Marina placed in front of the Yacht Club? It also showed that the old jetty had been removed? I think it would be sad to see the jetty removed? It is used a lot by visitors. There will be some that will say that people will be able to walk onto the new Marina?
But we all know that given time the Marina facility will for security reasons become a locked Marina,(they all have all around the UK and Europe) access for boat owners only! There will be no where in a Aberdovey to walk out over the water. Nowhere for the kids to crab and fish. It may not mean much to some? But I spent my childhood in Aberdovey at weekends from the age of seven upwards. At the age of 22 I became resident in Aberdovey from 1981 to 1997. I think the possible removal of the jetty may be a mistake?
I'm not saying no to a Marina. What I am saying is think hard about what you remove to achieve your goals. The council could never afford to build a new jetty once that one has gone? Just remember when you look out over the water in 20 years time at a fenced off and locked Marina, With security fences round it to stop people breaking into the boats and stealing their expensive electronics. Pull out an old photo graph taken from the Harbour Masters office looking down river towards the old jetty on a sunny August Bank Holiday. Now count how many adults and children you can see on that jetty. Quite a few eh??? more than you thought??

Aberdyfi is my favourite place in the whole area. The beach is very beautiful, the place itself is so attractive! It is a personal retreat for me - again and again. I can never get enough of Aberdyfi. I like the Bwtri Blasus for Coffee Lattes!

We have been holidaying in Aberdovey for well over 20 years, and our children (Now adults) really love the village. We used to think nothing of driving down for the day from Manchester (Total distance about 280 miles). We have stayed in about 8 different self catering places in and around Aberdovey over these 20 years. The only thing that I dont like is that following the sale of the Brittania Inn - there is no real village pub now, unless you walk up to Penhelig (Which can be a bit dangerous because of lack of footpaths on much of. the road). Our dream was to win enough money to be able to afford to retire to Aberdovey, but sadly that will never happen now. Please, PLEASE, dont spoil this lovely place !

We are about to visit Aberdyfi for the third year. Brian and Jenny at awel-y-mor always make us feel so welcome and really look after us. It is a wonderful village and we will visit every year. Special mention also for the Dovey Inn and the Britannia Inn!!

Someone tried to sell me the idea that building a harbour/marina in Aberdovey would benefit the village. What is going on here? River and boat users are a very small minority compared to the regular day tripper. If Aberdovey council have money to waste why not spent it on giving the locals an opportunity to develop their own skils and maintain a reasonable income all year round and not slip into the slump of seasonal work fluctuation?
